[Bug 592173] New: Security updates for the kernel reset some GRUB's menu.lst entries to installation defaults
http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=592173 http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=592173#c0 Summary: Security updates for the kernel reset some GRUB's menu.lst entries to installation defaults Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.2 Version: Final Platform: All OS/Version: openSUSE 11.2 Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Update Problems AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: schoenberg@fv-berlin.de QAContact: jsrain@novell.com Found By: --- Blocker: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; de; rv:1.9.1.8) Gecko/20100204 SUSE/3.5.8-0.1.1 Firefox/3.5.8 After installing a security kernel update values in GRUB's menu.lst have been resetted to values valid while setting up this systems: splash=native becomes splash=silent vga=normal becomes vga=0x31a I changed these values to the wanted ones after installation. Especially vga=0x31a (or other higher resolution) is very bad for a server behind a terminal gateway or KVM which doesn't support this resolution. (The resolution was higher while installation using a local monitor) Regarding splash=native: some guys prefer to see information while booting. This happened with all 11.2 kernel updates of the last weeks The latest (2.6.31.12-0.2) has the same problem. Joe Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. cp /boot/grub/menu.lst /boot/grub/menu.bac 2. update kernel 3. diff /boot/grub/menu.lst /boot/grub/menu.bac Actual Results: splash=silent vga=0x31a Expected Results: splash=native vga=normal -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Yes, Marcus,
one can find all values in /etc/sysconfig/bootloader. But the behavior described above definitely is new. Until dec 2009 or the like it was not nesessary to edit this file to keep own settings of menu.lst.
Joe
Hi, yes, this is new behavior which is introduced to provide save way to get parameters for newly installed kernels. There is some problems where if you change kernel flavor it could remove all parameters for boot this kernel. I think that I add to /boot/grub/menu.lst to top line warning that if you change this file, then for newly installed kernels you need to change also /etc/sysconfig/bootloader. Do you edit your parameters in yast2-bootloader or manually? And if manually do you have warning at top of file? -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
