https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=891104 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=891104#c0 Summary: Documentation use of ifconfig Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 13.1 Version: Final Platform: All OS/Version: openSUSE 13.1 Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Documentation AssignedTo: ke@suse.com ReportedBy: tonysu@su-networking.com QAContact: ke@suse.com Found By: --- Blocker: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.2; WOW64) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/36.0.1985.125 Safari/537.36 Referencing documentation at hhttps://activedoc.opensuse.org/book/opensuse-reference/chapter-13-basic-netw... The documentation describes use of "ifconfig" I understand "ifconfig" is being deprecated in favor of "ip addr" There is also a solid reason to use "ip addr" instead especially when inspecting interfaces, I discovered that "ifconfig" truncates the interface name which is important now that interfaces are no longer identified by generic names like "eth0" Many if not most interface names are now very long, and often the only way to identify interfaces using the same hardware is to see the <entire> untruncated name which can be displayed using "ip addr" -- Until I discovered this, I was always browsing to, and listing, then viewing the contents of the interface files. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: N/A Actual Results: N/A Expected Results: N/A N/A -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
