I have since reinstalled, and now get a grub error 15, without the option to edit the config... I didn't check "install generic MBR", just took the default settings. The machine has a single disk in it, which Yast was given 100% control over, so my expectation was that it would just work. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=221597 ------- Comment #14 from duwe@novell.com 2006-11-24 07:54 MST ------- @ #11 a): My preferred solution would be that if grub or lilo is detected in the MBR, it is replaced by a generic MBR and "our" partition activated, if possible. This would work for the 95% of ppl. who don't read documentation unless it's too late. The release notes should state that grub/lilo in the MBR will be replaced, unless the "experts"/detail menu is used, and experts with a "master" grub in the MBR should visit mentioned menu, or switch to generic MBR. @ #11 b) for beta/RC testers who stumble into this, they need to "boot installed system" from the install CD, finish installation, and then change the boot loader setup to the way it will be (?) the default for the goldmaster, as described above. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

Here's my relnotes-ready version: <title>Grub or LILO left over in the MBR from a previous installation</title> <para> If you have an older SuSE Linux installation on your disk which wrote grub or LILO into the master boot record (MBR) of your disk, it will now be replaced by a generic MBR automatically if possible. </para> <para> In case a grub or LILO in the MBR does not belong to the partition you are reinstalling or if you want to keep the old behaviour, it is advised to change the setting "boot loader location" in the [boot loader details(?)] menu. As a permanent solution for multiple Linux systems on one computer we suggest to use a generic MBR that loads a "master grub", or a similar boot selector, that is able to chain load operating system loaders from various partitions. </para> -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
