https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=227234 Summary: Sb live 5.1 (model number sb0100) driver name emu10k1 Product: openSUSE 10.2 Version: Final Platform: Other OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: Sound AssignedTo: tiwai@novell.com ReportedBy: franzferdinand2@blueyonder.co.uk QAContact: qa@suse.de The card refuses to work at all. Irqs are reported miles out of the range and it fiales to output sound on the desktop. the alsaconf and yastsound test's both produce sound and at the level specified. I have tried all the different port in my motherboard and tried forcing irq's the bios and setserial. The card does work. i have tested it in windows and it is known to work in 10.1 and FC6. i have also tried deleting the file /etc/modprobe.d/sound and rebooting, removing the interface form yastsound and reconfiguring. this worked once till a reboot. custonm kernels don;t even help. I'm curretnly using the default kernel on the dvd and my hardware is as follows amd athlon 3200+ barton 1GB ram gigabyte GA-7n400pro 2 rev2 nforce 2 mobo SB Live! 5.1 sound card geforce 6800GT let's get this fixed coz right now the os is so buggy it's verging on unuseable. many ppl i know have had many problems with the OS. one person i know cannot use grub and had to resolve his own deps in the installer Andreas should be fired for oking to buggy as hell os's in a row this is beyond a joke. i have been up since 10am on the 7th trying to fix this and have now given up. If you stick to your line of not fixing anything till 10.3. 10.3 better come in a matter of days. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=227234 franzferdinand2@blueyonder.co.uk changed: What |Removed |Added ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Severity|Critical |Major OS/Version|Other |SuSE Other ------- Comment #2 from franzferdinand2@blueyonder.co.uk 2006-12-09 21:04 MST ------- ok did some more work on it and found a solution, kinda. basically it looks like if you boot straight into the gui the system isn;t creating the block devices in /dev right. even when i tried the nfoce2 MCP on my mobo it didn't work right till i did the following. dropped to init 3 login as myslef and then su to root. Run init 5 and login to kde as normal. this works and as i rightthis i have full 5.1 on the sb live and the mcp works as well if i want it too. this is not perfect though as i have to do it on every reboot. Also i noticed that the nvidia gfx drviers from nvidia.co.uk had issues with running wine. i was installing emule as amule doesn't and can't work yet (nice one there guys) and i got this following message when i ran it under my own user: NVIDIA: could not open the device file /dev/nvidiactl (Permission denied). NVIDIA: Direct rendering failed; attempting indirect rendering. NVIDIA: could not open the device file /dev/nvidiactl (Permission denied). NVIDIA: Direct rendering failed; attempting indirect rendering. To me this screams a permission problem. Is mknod setting the right access level when it creates the devices? first place i would look if i knew the first thing about programming. Seeing as i found a work around (is anyone actually working on this except me?) i'll lower down the level to major. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=227234 franzferdinand2@blueyonder.co.uk changed: What |Removed |Added ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Component|Sound |Security ------- Comment #4 from franzferdinand2@blueyonder.co.uk 2006-12-10 01:19 MST ------- right here am i posting again. done some more research and discovered the following. It is definitely a system wide permissions issue. i ran a few tests in cedega in the gfx card and the nvidia drivers after a member of suselinuxsupport.de mentioned that game play was slow and laggy. I ran the test as my normal user and the opengl test failed, Ran the same test as root and it passed. So now i have confirmation can we get this sorted today please. beacuse surely it must only be a small patch to fix this. It seems to only be devices in /dev that are affected so should be easy to fix right? i'll cahnge the type from sound to security. BTW i just remembered i didn't install apparmour it that makes a difference -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=227234 franzferdinand2@blueyonder.co.uk changed: What |Removed |Added ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Status|NEW |RESOLVED Resolution| |FIXED ------- Comment #5 from franzferdinand2@blueyonder.co.uk 2006-12-12 07:31 MST ------- right i have a solution. for all users that have issues with the sb live you need to add yourselves to the audio group in yast. it transpired during the testing that also there are issues with some audigy ls cards. the ppl effected will need to upgrade to alsa 1.0.14rc1 or higher (at the time of writting that is the most current version). also it has come to my attention durng my research that there is an issue with the nvidia drivers and 10.2 permission setup. all uers of nvidia cards now need to be a member of the video group. can you guys get a patch out to apply these settings. cheers all. and i hope you guys enjoyed me doing your jobs for you. coz i didn't -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
