http://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=974527 Bug ID: 974527 Summary: cifs + overlayfs: BUG: unable to handle kernel NULL pointer dereference at 000000000000054c Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE Tumbleweed Version: Current Hardware: x86-64 OS: Other Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: Kernel Assignee: kernel-maintainers@forge.provo.novell.com Reporter: sebastian.kratz@piraten-ahoi.de QA Contact: qa-bugs@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: --- i've tried to mount overlayfs over an smb mount with a local mount. mount //10.0.0.1/share /media/share mount -t overlayfs overlay -o=lowerdir=/media/multimedia1,upperdir=/media/multimedia2,workdir=/media/multimedia2/.work /media/multimedia reading works fine, but after copying a file to overlayfs i get the following error: cifs + overlayfs: BUG: unable to handle kernel NULL pointer dereference at 000000000000054c IP: [<ffffffffa082d2f8>] build_path_from_dentry+0x58/0x2e0 [cifs] when trying to read. all reads are blocked, but the BUG message is there only once. direct smb access is still possible without error including FUSE unionfs. full BUG message: http://paste.opensuse.org/65133411 -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

thank you, overlayfs over btrfs and ext4 seems to work. mount --bind also seems to work over overlayfs, as does any other mount over it i tried. good work.
Thanks for the feedback.
the only problem remains is with SOME german umlauts via smb. creating a file "ä" works, but the following file name is - according to nautilus - a "stale file handle" (which prevents me from opening the dir completly!):
This is a different problem and we would appreciate a new bugzilla entry for this. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.
