Setting index=1 and index=2 for other possible devices at boot (i.e. snd-usb-audio and snd-mpu401) should work. Or, setting index=-2 for both may work, too. This means to find an empty slot except for 0. Give it a try. You may want to ask why don't use the persistent device -- since many sound apps and sound backends use the number scheme, the order of the devices is still important. The problem of kmix is a typical one.
