/var/log/messages aren't strictly kernel messages.
Nevertheless... you set Master volume to 0. Try the following: % amixer set Master -12dB
Then try aplay first without pulseaudio. % aplay -vv -Dplughw /usr/share/sound/alsa/test.wav
If it works, try pulseaudio again. Don't forget to choose the default output device to analog one (unless you are using HDMI).
Also, don't forget to reset NEEDINFO flag after providing the requested information. Thanks.
1. The command "amixer set Master -12dB" didn't seem to work - although amixer was installed. 2. The command "aplay -vv -Dplughw /usr/share/sound/alsa/test.wav" did work without pulseaudio but volume output was low. 4. This command also worked after pulseaudio was restarted and with higher volume. 5. The foregoing was tested using the older kernel from Milestone 4 (2.6.30-2.i586) in which sound works on this system 6. No sound at all using the Milestone 5 kernel from git. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Ah, you have to give -- to allow '-12dB' as an argument. Run like: % amixer -c0 set Master -- -12dB
6. No sound at all using the Milestone 5 kernel from git.
Give alsa-info.sh output after changing the volume please. Also, give alsa-info.sh output on M4 kernel, too. It's important to compare both cases. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

The mute after reboot problem is known and has already fixed.
On your system, it seems that the PA is used as the backend, so you'd need PA. Otherwise you'd need to change the setup by yourself.
Anything else? Otherwise I'll close this bug.
I thinks that's OK now. If I find anything else I'll get back to you. You can close the bug. Thanks for your help!
