[Bug 821484] New: hibernation is often interrupted while hibernating with pm-utils
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=821484 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=821484#c0 Summary: hibernation is often interrupted while hibernating with pm-utils Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 12.3 Version: Final Platform: i686 OS/Version: openSUSE 12.3 Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Basesystem AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: lashkevi@landau.ac.ru QAContact: qa-bugs@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux i686; rv:20.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/20.0 When I try to hibernate my computer either with KDE function or with launching pm-hibernate manually, it often start hibernating and then interrupts it either on "Snapshotting system" or while writing the image on the swap space (thought it is enough free swap space). The /var/log/pm-suspend.log file turns out to be corrupted. It happens often, and is sometimes persistent. It is weird, but from time to time stopping Firefox helps. Nevertheless, the command "echo disk > /sys/power/state" works perfectly (and very fast). Reproducible: Sometimes Steps to Reproduce: 1. Starting hibernation from KDE or by using "pm-hibernate". It is better to use "splash = n" option in the "/etc/suspend.conf". 2. Wait for what happens. 3. Actual Results: The screen blackens. "S2disk: Snapshotting system" appears. The cursor is blinking. Then either: 1) The cursor stops blinking. The X session reappears. The system resumes. Or: 2) The hibernation continues till writing the image progress ling appears. At some percent of writing it slows, then stops, then the computer resumes. Expected Results: Normal hibernation. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

/sys/power/state", as well as I understand), it works better, but after several times of hibernating/resuming begins to refuse hibernating as well.
2. I have made the /sys/power/pm_test tests, and every except "core" is passed. 3. Attempts to unload network modules os to stop networking are of no help. 4. I am surprised by no reaction (even formal or negative) to my report. I am bored by this problem very much, and it seems to me an important one. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Some extra comments:
1. If I use SLEEP_MODULE="kernel" (which is equivalent to "echo disk
/sys/power/state", as well as I understand), it works better, but after several times of hibernating/resuming begins to refuse hibernating as well.
Probably file locking problem that previous pm-hibernate terminated prematurely?
2. I have made the /sys/power/pm_test tests, and every except "core" is passed.
The core does everything necessary except for calling the lowest level firmware actions to actually put the system to sleep, if the testing fail could suggest a hardware or firmware problem rather than os.
3. Attempts to unload network modules os to stop networking are of no help.
As you have passed device pm-test the result is expected.
4. I am surprised by no reaction (even formal or negative) to my report. I am bored by this problem very much, and it seems to me an important one.
Did you try SLEEP_MODULE="uswsusp" (ie s2disk) with splash disabled ? edit /etc/suspend.conf and set splash = n -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Did you try SLEEP_MODULE="uswsusp" (ie s2disk) with splash disabled ? edit /etc/suspend.conf and set splash = n
As I understand, uswsusp is used by default (without SLEEP_MODULE= at all). I always use "splash = n". The result is described in my initial report. If fails, either resumes appearing the line "s2disk: snapshotting system", or while writing the image (I mean the percentage of writing increasing on the console). Usually, several times hibernates normally, then begins to fail. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
