I'm also interested in the results of running Firefox and Evolution with a clean ~/.local/var/pki/nssdb dir. It's possible that the contents of the initial secmod.db in the source database dir might affect the migration.
I use many different systems with shared $HOME -- the 11.1 firefox _must_ interoperate with other firefox instances!
To see the security modules loaded for the migration target dir, do
modutil -dbdir sql:$HOME/.local/var/pki/nssdb -list

how would a "successful migration" would look like ? I created a new firefox profile for testing and I logged into two different web pages. then I quit firefox (no save) and restarted. for both pages the login data was not offered directly. clicking into the username input fields (only) the correct login name was displayed, but selecting this username did not add the password. in Edit -> Preferences -> Securiry -> Saves Passwords... the list again is completely empty :-( so even with a clean new profile firefox passwords just don't work (only for me?) for referece here is the list of installed versions since I did a "zypper update" in the mean time: harald > rpm -qa | grep -i mozilla MozillaFirefox-3.0.3-5.1 mozilla-nspr-4.7.1-20.42 mozilla-nspr-32bit-4.7.1-20.41 MozillaFirefox-branding-openSUSE-3.0.3-2.1 mozilla-xulrunner181-32bit-1.8.1.17-2.1 mozilla-nss-tools-3.12.0-54.7 mozilla-nss-3.12.0-54.7 mozilla-nss-32bit-3.12.0-54.5 mozilla-xulrunner190-1.9.0.3-4.2 mozilla-xulrunner190-gnomevfs-1.9.0.3-4.2 -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Those of you affected by the bug:
* Did you run Evolution prior to running Firefox?
no
* Do you run Evolution at all?
never
* Did you run any other application that uses xulrunner/Mozilla embedding?
how can I know? I never use thunderbird. what about acroread? it uses xulrunner for internal help. does acroread embedding in firefox qualify? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Yes, it works for me. The certs and keys are migrated over, and Firefox keeps remembering and completing my passwords. Ok, another diagnostic test:
- mkdir nsstest && cd nsstest - cp ~/.mozilla/firefox/<profiledir>/*.db . - certutil -L -X -d sql:. >out.1 - certutil -L -d sql:. >out.2 - diff -u out.1 out.2
I'd like to see the output of the diff, and the list of files (with sizes) in the nsstest directory after this.
I just tried your new test with my "clean profile with 2 passwords" (see comment #27): to (only?) my surprise, there are no *.db file in the profile dir. I grepped for the the login names (which show up for those web pages iff I click into the name input field) and I found those strings only in the file formhistory.sqlite. this reminds me that firefox did _not_ ask me at login if the username/passwords shall be saved for this login/page. I checked the preferences/security settings of firefox and "remember passwords for sites" is checked with empty exceptions list -- and the "saved passwords" list is still empty (which matches no *.db files found and the grep result ?!?). my final test for now: I completely (re)moved my ~/.mozilla/ dir and restarted firefox completely from scratch. I logged into bugzilla.novell.com and again firefox did not ask if it should store the password. after exit of firefox my username is found only in formhistory.sqlite -- here is the full file list: --- 8< ------ 8< ------ 8< ------ 8< ------ 8< ------ 8< ------ 8< ------ 8< --- drwxr-xr-x 2 harald users 4096 Nov 17 10:01 Cache/ -rw-r--r-- 1 harald users 2044098 Nov 17 10:00 XPC.mfasl -rw-r--r-- 1 harald users 878782 Nov 17 10:01 XUL.mfasl drwx------ 2 harald users 4096 Nov 17 10:01 bookmarkbackups/ -rw-r--r-- 1 harald users 17157 Nov 17 09:59 bookmarks.html drwxr-xr-x 2 harald users 4096 Nov 17 09:59 chrome/ -rw------- 1 harald users 159 Nov 17 09:59 compatibility.ini -rw-r--r-- 1 harald users 146633 Nov 17 09:59 compreg.dat -rw-r--r-- 1 harald users 7168 Nov 17 09:59 content-prefs.sqlite -rw-r--r-- 1 harald users 2048 Nov 17 10:01 cookies.sqlite -rw-r--r-- 1 harald users 2048 Nov 17 09:59 downloads.sqlite drwxr-xr-x 2 harald users 4096 Nov 17 09:59 extensions/ -rw-r--r-- 1 harald users 106 Nov 17 09:59 extensions.cache -rw-r--r-- 1 harald users 111 Nov 17 09:59 extensions.ini -rw-r--r-- 1 harald users 1179 Nov 17 09:59 extensions.rdf -rw-r--r-- 1 harald users 4096 Nov 17 10:00 formhistory.sqlite -rw-r--r-- 1 harald users 1455 Nov 17 10:01 localstore.rdf -rw-r--r-- 1 harald users 2339 Nov 17 09:59 mimeTypes.rdf -rw-r--r-- 1 harald users 2048 Nov 17 09:59 permissions.sqlite -rw-r--r-- 1 harald users 167936 Nov 17 10:01 places.sqlite -rw------- 1 harald users 1380 Nov 17 09:59 pluginreg.dat -rw-r--r-- 1 harald users 1581 Nov 17 10:01 prefs.js -rw-r--r-- 1 harald users 2048 Nov 17 09:59 search.sqlite -rw-r--r-- 1 harald users 7651328 Nov 17 10:01 urlclassifier3.sqlite -rw-r--r-- 1 harald users 154 Nov 17 09:59 urlclassifierkey3.txt -rw-r--r-- 1 harald users 101769 Nov 17 09:59 xpti.dat --- 8< ------ 8< ------ 8< ------ 8< ------ 8< ------ 8< ------ 8< ------ 8< --- -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

You need to create the .db files in the profile dir using the old, unpatched xulrunner package (or the one shipped as an update, with the patch removed). It doesn't have to be a "clean" profile dir. You can use an old profile dir even if it's been "migrated". The original data won't be changed by the migration. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

same for me: I updated to latest factory and created a new, clean account. loggin into bugzilla.novell.com the first time I do not get ask if the password shall be saved. the "saved passwords" list in preferences still is empty. restarting firefox: preferences list still empty, username/password do not show up in novell login page :-( here is the version list of installed rpms for reference: harald harald > rpm -qa --last | egrep -i 'mozilla|xul' mozilla-nss-tools-3.12.0-54.9 Sat Nov 22 10:00:55 2008 mozilla-nss-3.12.0-54.9 Sat Nov 22 10:00:47 2008 mozilla-nss-32bit-3.12.0-54.6 Sat Nov 22 10:00:42 2008 MozillaFirefox-branding-openSUSE-3.0.3-2.2 Sat Nov 22 10:00:36 2008 mozilla-nspr-32bit-4.7.1-20.42 Sat Nov 22 10:00:35 2008 mozilla-nspr-4.7.1-20.44 Sat Nov 22 10:00:34 2008 MozillaFirefox-3.0.4-1.1 Sat Nov 22 09:58:32 2008 mozilla-xulrunner190-gnomevfs-1.9.0.4-1.2 Sat Nov 22 09:56:46 2008 mozilla-xulrunner190-1.9.0.4-1.2 Sat Nov 22 09:56:42 2008 mozilla-xulrunner181-32bit-1.8.1.17-2.1 Sat Nov 15 01:32:36 2008 -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

so imho to run "certutil -L -X -d sql:~/.local/var/pki/nssdb/ must be done with the cert and key inplace ?
Please read my description in comment #47 carefully again and notice the difference between cert8/cert9 and key3/key4 (In reply to comment #59 from Harald Koenig)

Don't forget to check libnsssharedhelper0 version. 1.0.4 should be in Factory and it shouldn't fiddle at all with the database by default. Harald, if you still have 1.0.3 please update to 1.0.4 and don't try to fiddle with it. In case you are interested in sharing your NSS database between different applications we can discuss that by mail. Once everything is working as expected we/I will write a Wiki page. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Most of the previous comments are not really understandable. to use the mentioned workarounds you need mozilla-nss-tools installed it's not installed by default because you usually don't need them for normal operation
certutil: function failed: An I/O error occurred during security authorization. This happens most likely because the cert9.db and key4.db which seem to be in this directory are broken ones.
This might very well be possible....

I did, but my 64bit install reacts totaly different from the 32bit one: see comment #62, i did not know this at the time i wrote comment #57 and #58. The 64bit version doesn't create new cert9 and key4 files, my 32bit does. That is why i get different outcome when trying to update the db...?

That sounds quite unlikely given that I did all my testing on both 32 and 64bit. Sorry, this bug is cluttered with a lot of incomplete descriptions so I can only really rely on symptoms I see myself for most of them. So please everybody. This bug is basically resolved when all changes done are hitting Factory very soon because the feature is disabled by default then. We are still very interested in fixing all the issues which are introduced by enabling that feature explicitely. I volunteer to guide people through the different workarounds if they are interested by private mail. No need to discuss all this in this bug. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

fine. but for now even the basic setup (new/clean account) still does not work for me, so I say sharing $HOME is lower priority ?! again: for me (64bit!?) firefox with new account does _not_ ask if passwd shall be saved, does _not_ show names/passwds in preferences/security list and thus does _not_ create any *.db files in ~/.mozilla/firefox/*/ it does create db files in ~/.local/var/pki/nssdb/ : -rw-r--r-- 1 h2 users 9216 Nov 22 16:00 cert9.db -rw-r--r-- 1 h2 users 9216 Nov 22 16:00 key4.db -rw-r--r-- 1 h2 users 904 Nov 22 16:00 pkcs11.txt with those files I get h2@harald:~/.local/var/pki/nssdb> certutil -L -X -d sql:~/.local/var/pki/nssdb/ certutil: function failed: An I/O error occurred during security authorization. according to #47 I removed those files and copied the files from an old firefox profile (from different user, does this matter?) and again get h2@harald:~/.local/var/pki/nssdb> certutil -L -X -d sql:~/.local/var/pki/nssdb/ certutil: function failed: An I/O error occurred during security authorization. fos this files: -rw------- 1 h2 users 131072 Nov 23 15:10 cert8.db -rw------- 1 h2 users 16384 Nov 23 15:10 key3.db -rw------- 1 h2 users 16384 Nov 23 15:10 secmod.db after submitting this report I´ll stop/restart firefox and try with my original old $HOME with comment #47. for now I'm only interested in getting firefox to work with a plain new account. only once this works again I'll care about shared $HOME, migration etc. ... -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

If you check the buildservice libnsssharedhelper0 is already at 1.0.4 which just fixes the basic setup. Please wait until this gets through to the FTP Factory.
