https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=798270 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=798270#c0 Summary: excesively Invasive and repetive hard disk error warning Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 12.1 Version: Final Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: openSUSE 12.1 Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: GNOME AssignedTo: bnc-team-gnome@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: carlos.e.r@opensuse.org QAContact: qa-bugs@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: --- Created an attachment (id=520030) --> (http://bugzilla.novell.com/attachment.cgi?id=520030) Photo of popup Whenever I plug a usb stick, and every so many minutes, a text like this goes into the log:
Jan 11 21:10:35 Minas-Anor dbus-daemon[913]: **** Refreshing ATA SMART data for /sys/devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:1f.2/host0/target0:0:0/0:0:0:0/block/sda

Wenever this happens, I get a pop-up warning in gnome3 (see first attachment), at the bottom of the screen, saying that I have problems in one disk, and asks if I want to examine (which pops a useless disk manager, see second attachment). What I do not know is what exactly is it warning about. There is no hint when clicking on "examine", no saying what I should examine. Guessing, because I'm an old dog, I look at smartctl, and there is a warning on one of the disks - not an error - notice the "passed" result:
Minas-Anor:~ # smartctl --health /dev/sda smartctl 5.42 2011-10-20 r3458 [x86_64-linux-3.1.10-1.16-desktop] (SUSE RPM) Copyright (C) 2002-11 by Bruce Allen, http://smartmontools.sourceforge.net
=== START OF READ SMART DATA SECTION === SMART overall-health self-assessment test result: PASSED Please note the following marginal Attributes: ID# ATTRIBUTE_NAME FLAG VALUE WORST THRESH TYPE UPDATED WHEN_FAILED RAW_VALUE 190 Airflow_Temperature_Cel 0x0022 058 044 045 Old_age Always In_the_past 42 (0 3 42 20 0)
Minas-Anor:~ #
I report this as a major problem, because it is repetitive and useless. There is no saying what the problem might be, nor what disk. The examine button is also useless, no clue what to do there - and it would be useless, because the only warning is in a different program about a problem that happened months or years ago. There should be a tick box or button not to report again, or at least not in this session. On the other hand, there is no report about the real problem that I have in that disk (which I do not disclose, as smartctl --health says nothing about it), and which is going to be handled by disk replacement in due time. Again, I'm aware of the problem, telling me a hundred times is useless. Do not tell me again, you (the system) are wasting my time. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
