But it doesn't only fail on formats which are decoded by ffmpeg, also mpeg2 streams fail (they are not encoded by ffmpeg, they also work, when you remove ffmpeg completely, I've just tried it). So it's not (no more?) a ffmpeg bug, it's a vlc bug. I'm sure you never have played a correct video with vlc after updating form 0.8.6d to 0.8.6e. I've installed 0.8.6e here for testing and it works fine with the downgraded ffmpeg. So this where two problems, one is fixed (ffmpeg incompatiblity with, so it wasn't completely wrong, I've closed this bug), the other one is VLC itselve and it's not fixed until now (so it also wasn't wrong to reopen the bug). Quentin knows about the problem, and I've also informed him about this bugzilla entry. He tries to solve the problem in cooperation with the vlc developers.
