I would suggest you try setting a different compose key via setxkbmap -option compose:ralt or similar. Furthermore, I highly doubt that the Multi_key should be transparent to Emacs, as XEmacs for instance shows "multi-key s -" in the echo area after I tap on Multi_key, S, waiting for whatever comes next to complete the input. However, it results in the same is undefined error :-( I also mapped the compose key to different keys, like using -option compose:ralt (right alt key) or compose:menu etc etc I talked with some GNU Emacs gurus on IRC and they cannot reproduce my problem, they said it must be a distribution specific bug. However, you cannot reproduce this problem either, so I also do not know what is going on. I'm just a user, so I don't know how to shed more light on this issue, the only strange thing I can tell about it is that it works in other apps, just not in GNU Emacs -- and I did not touch the default configuration at all, did a fresh install and everything. Older XIM servers don’t support Compose, for example when using kinput2 (Japanese XIM server, needs canna): env XMODIFIERS=@im=kinput2 LANG=ja_JP.UTF-8 emacs -q you see the problem you reported ( is undefined error from emacs). But if you use a XIM server which has its own builtin Compose support like SCIM, Compose in emacs works: env XMODIFIERS=@im=SCIM LANG=ja_JP.UTF-8 emacs -q The problem is that Compose is also a sort of XIM. You can select using Compose by setting XMODIFIERS=@im=local. But then you cannot input Japanese or Chinese. To input Japanese or Chinese you need to set XMODIFIERS to an XIM server which supports Japanese or Chinese. But then you cannot use the Compose support in X11 anymore because you can only use one XIM server at a time. To solve this problems, some XIM servers, for example scim and uim have implemented their own Compose support. I've always been using SCIM: % echo $XMODIFIERS @im=SCIM And I've always been subject to the compose that is compiled into scim, and it does the job. However, compose does not work with GNU Emacs, and also not with xterm. Since I'm mainly using GTK apps, I didn't notice this breakage. What got me confused about this bug is that I wanted to switch from XEmacs to GNU Emacs, and compose mysteriously works in XEmacs. So I think something with my scim setup must be broken. I didn't do any scim setup at all though, any thoughts how to debug and fix it? As typing ABC continues to work as expected and only compose breaks, kind of strange.
