Which is odd since I'm able to switch to the "C:\" drive (from a boot off of the Vista media) and browse it's contents including the C:\Windows directory. Other than that everything else (besides username and stuff) was left as it. This is NOT how it failed for me the second time, so I'm going to reinstall Vista and then try reinstalling SUSE again in the same spots, as thats what caused the problem for me the second time. I'm not so sure what I did was correct, but I let RC2 live x86_64 boot from root partition, make it active and rewrite MBR with generic. After that system was unbootable - then I installed grub into MBR using supergrubdisk.org and Vista showed the famous notice. Then I installed opensuse RC1 x64 from DVD and selected all defaults apart from the diskpartitioning. I have it as follows: mbr: grub sda1 windows vista ntfs 40 gb sda2 linux swap 2gb sda3 linux / 38gb installing linux made vista hang when trying to load winload.exe so the grub entry was correct. activating it in fdisk and booting the dvd to repair fixed it for me. before rebooting the first time to windows and trying to mount the ntfs partition manually i received the following on screen error: stefan@sandra:~> sudo mount -a $LogFile indicates unclean shutdown (0, 0) Failed to mount '/dev/sda1': Operation not supported Mount is denied because NTFS is marked to be in use. Choose one action: Choice 1: If you have Windows then disconnect the external devices by clicking on the 'Safely Remove Hardware' icon in the Windows taskbar then shutdown Windows cleanly. Choice 2: If you don't have Windows then you can use the 'force' option for your own responsibility. yes, that's at least the cause of the bug I'm seeing.

So Jozef: 2 things:

- fix examine_mbr to track BOOTMGR as Windows and the one I sent as generic - write 440 and not 446 bytes

This should improve the situation enough to make this FIXED

Tested and works well. I did it by another way but the result is the same: I've created a backup of the first 512 bytes before installation, after the installation was done, Vista refused to boot so I booted the rescue system and replaced bytes 441-446 in /dev/sda with those from the backup.
