[Bug 627510] New: Sans Serif font: kerning problem
http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=627510 http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=627510#c0 Summary: Sans Serif font: kerning problem Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.3 Version: Final Platform: Other OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: X.Org AssignedTo: bnc-team-xorg-bugs@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: agruen@novell.com QAContact: xorg-maintainer-bugs@forge.provo.novell.com CC: tiwai@novell.com, thomas.schraitle@novell.com, pgajdos@novell.com Found By: --- Blocker: --- The text "Default Address" is rendered so that there is only half a space between the "t" and the "A" at 9pt. At 8pt and 10pt, this problem doesn't exist here. In the text "DefaultAddress", the distance between "t" and "A" also looks a bit too small, but much less than in "Default Address. This is particularly annoying because this is my menu font. Does any of you feel like the right person for this? -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I don't even know if Sans Serif is the actual font name; it may be an alias for *a* sans serif font. Do you know how I could find that out?
Use fc-match. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

fc-match "Sans Serif" DejaVuSans.ttf: "DejaVu Sans" "Book"
And DejaVu Sans isn't definitely the same font that appears when one chooses "Sans Serif" in the kwrite's font menu (try to choose DejaVu Sans for comparation). When I installed fetchmsttfonts.ttf I really found the Arial the same font as "Sans Serif" in the kwrite's menu and even with the same behavior for 8, 9 and 10pt etc. But it can't be the same while it was there before installation. Or yes, there can be virtual font "Sans Serif" mapped to Arial if installed or some other *very* similar font when Arial isn't installed. And more over, the order of fonts in the dialog field points to an idea that "Sans Serif", "Serif" and "Monospace" respectively are somehow predefined in the kwrite. Lubos, do you know where come these fonts from? I get the same behavior with oowriter but only with Arial (Sans Serif wasn't present) font, with no surprise. And indeed, with sbrabec we have found out that ' ' and 'A' pair has value -113, so the space is really truncated. So we bet on round error. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
