After rebooting pidgin does not start anymore. Output: Pidgin 2.5.1 has segfaulted and attempted to dump a core file. This is a bug in the software and has happened through no fault of your own. If you can reproduce the crash, please notify the developers by reporting a bug at: http://developer.pidgin.im/simpleticket/ Please make sure to specify what you were doing at the time and post the backtrace from the core file. It is a crash while loading a GStreamer module, surprisingly in OpenGL. It's very strange - pidgin uses GStreamer for sounds, not video. Tha crash probably happens while initializing /usr/lib64/gstreamer-0.10/libgstcacasink.so (cacasink: A colored ASCII art video sink). I think, that it may be just during enumeration of all GStreamer modules. And the crash happens during dlopen() call, inside a properietary OpenGL module. Which is your graphic card driver? Could you try to switch to open source drivers and try to reproduce the crash? If I upgrade to gstreamer-0_10-plugins-good|0.10.10-3.22.1 from gstreamer-0_10-plugins-good|0.10.10-3.21.1, pidgin will crash as soon as it attempts to play a sound. (sometimes on startup, sometimes when I receive an IM). If I downgrade back to 0.10.10-3.21.1, the problem goes away. If I manually compile pidgin with --disable-gstreamer, the problem goes away. The problem first occurred under Pidgin 2.5.1, and continued after I upgraded to 2.5.8. Unfortunately, my attempts to capture a useful backtrace have been a failure. Security updates in this package fix overflow in PNG parsing and Quicktime, i. e. nothing which has anything to do with sound. Maybe it is a random co-incidence. There was a similar bug of pidgin related to sound. Last night, after spending several hours, I was sure. But this morning, pidgin is not crashing, even though it was broken when I gave up working on it yesterday. What I know: - pidgin was working fine as of Wed July 1st -- I normally use it continously throughout the day to communicate with remote clients - The next time I used it was Tuesday July 7th 17:30, where I initiated a conversation. - I closed the window, and the other person sent a message to me, which caused pidgin to crash, at 17:37. Pidgin continued to crash, and I stopped using it as I had other work that needed to be done. - On Wed 2009-07-08 at 8pm, I began the 5-hour process of trying to debug the problem. I downloaded the source for pidgin 2.5.8 and built a copy prefixed to install under a /tmp/pidgin-tree root as I did not want to overwrite any existing files. - The compiled version crashed at the same places. I recompiled with --disable-gstreamer and it stopped crashing. - I noted the gstreamer update. I downgraded gstreamer to 21.1. The version compiled with gstreamer support no longer crashed. The prepackaged pidgin also no longer crashed. - At the behest of the pidgin support folks, I upgraded again (at which point pidgin began crashing again) in order to try to generate a backtrace of the problem. That proved futile as the stack was corrupted (according to valgrind and according to the output) by the time the segfault was thrown. At 1am Thu 2009-07-09 I finally gave up trying to diagnose the root cause for the day. And here we are today. Now pidgin is working again, without crashing. I think some memory corruption is definitely going on; if it happenned on intel machines too, maybe not nvidia's fault, but I don't understand why isn't it reproducible there but is with libnvidia.
