[Bug 841392] New: A live 32bit USB (Beta1, KDE) self-destructs
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=841392 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=841392#c0 Summary: A live 32bit USB (Beta1, KDE) self-destructs Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE Factory Version: 13.1 Beta 1 Platform: i686 OS/Version: SUSE Other Status: NEW Severity: Critical Priority: P5 - None Component: Installation AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: nrickert@ameritech.net QAContact: jsrain@suse.com Found By: --- Blocker: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64; rv:23.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/23.0 The 32bit live iso for 13.1Beta was written to a USB, using dd_rescue. I then attempted to boot the live system. The kernel loads. Then there is some disk activity. Then there is a message about failure to mount the root partition. Then it reboots. Examining the USB, it looks as if the problem occurs when attempting to create a hybrid partition (for copy-on-write saving of data). Instead of creating a hybrid partition, the entire USB has been formatted as the hybrid. Plugging the USB into another running system, the KDE device notifier tells me that "hybrid" is present. I click the mount button, then check what was mounted. The entire disk ("/dev/sdb" in my test) was mounted with name "hybrid". I have repeated this twice, with two different computers, recreating the live USB each time. This may be related to bug 827520 (which still happens for 64bit live USB). But the behavior of 32bit is far worse. An addendum. The USB that I used is an 80G IDE disk in a disk enclosure. This USB works fine (apart from bug 827520) with the 64bit live iso. I verified the downloaded image file (though "only" with the KTorrent data check, not sure if that's quite as reliable as md5 or sha).
I verified all my downloads against the supplied sha1 as well as the signature. Also if it helps, the x86_64 KDE did work for as normal, didn't try GNOME. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

if we would build the 32bit iso also with firmware="efi" we would solve the problem by another workaround
If you do that, then the "live-fat-stick" script probably won't work (it does not seem to work on a 64bit live iso). That's not necessarily a problem, though the wiki entry might need to be changed. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I need the /var/log/boot.kiwi file to say more about the problem
Where am I supposed to find those logs, given that the boot USB has been overwritten and a new ext4 file system created on top? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
