I looked at this today. Xinerama is happier with the change/patch you pasted above - it doesn't error out. Whatever it did returned in a way that the console screen wasn't readable. But I tried again saving the output in a 'script' session. I think we might be strolling in to the unsupported nature of an ia64 prism here.
