I do not have the problem with a belkin nik using rt73usb. rt73usb is for Ralink USB wifi. Not the Atheros wifi. This made me confused. Also, I do not have the problem with kernel 3.1.9-1.4.1 Here, do you mean the ath5k in kernel 3.1.9-1.4.1 ?

Yes, I inserted a Belkin usb nik (rt73usb) to maintain connection. According the the subject reported that ath5k is for Atheros wifi module, not for Ralink. If Ralink is working fine, doesn't mean ath5k should work fine. I am sorry, I am bit confused. I would recommend you can plug the same Atheros USB wifi adapter to different machine, install the same OS to test. I do not have a problem with kernel 3.1.9-1.4.1 and ath5k, just with 3.2.+++ kernel So the ath5k for 3.1.9-1.4.1 is working fine ? But 3.2.+++ is not, right ? The desktop is a test box, I can alter it for you but will need guidance. Yes, take the Atheros USB wifi module to test different machines with the same OS (kernel), look if it is working fine. :)
