https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=708214 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=708214#c0 Summary: Desktop kernel won't load in 12.1 M3. The default kernel works fine. Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 12.1 Version: Factory Platform: i686 OS/Version: SuSE Other Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: Kernel AssignedTo: kernel-maintainers@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: nrickert@ameritech.net QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64; rv:5.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/5.0 If I attempt to boot using the desktop kernel vmlinuz-3.0.0-rc7-2-desktop the system hangs and has to be powered off to recover. The last line that I see on the console is the "initrd" line. Then the screen blanks, then nothing. Nothing significant is displayed, and nothing is logged. Computer is a Dell Inspiron N5010 laptop. Although 64 bit capable, I installed the 32 bit version in a test partition. The system has 6G of memory, but it is not all accessible with the default kernel. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Reboot 2. Select the desktop kernel in the grub menu 3. Hit enter. See the system hang. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I added iommu=noaperture to the boot parameters.
Thanks for the suggestion. Unfortunately, it did not help. So I tried "iommu=off" and "iommu=force". Neither of those helped either. What I failed to mention in earlier reports, is that the desktop kernel ran fine with openSUSE 11.4, and with the first 12.1 milestone I tested (I think that was M2). It seemed to have no problem with the 2.x kernels used then, and there were no boot messages about BIOS bugs. Whatever the problem is, it is new to the 3.x kernels. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Does this bug only manifest on 64bit systems?
I'm not sure. Perhaps it only occurs for Intel core i3 processors. In any case - good news. There was a kernel update today, to: 3.1.9-1.4 and the desktop kernel is finally loading after that update. So I guess the bug is fixed. I'm not sure if I am supposed to mark this as resolved. But I will. Somebody else can change it back if that is not appropriate. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
