[Bug 227881] New: Installation of the Grub boot manager fails on OpenSuSE 10.2
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=227881 Summary: Installation of the Grub boot manager fails on OpenSuSE 10.2 Product: openSUSE 10.2 Version: Final Platform: x86 OS/Version: SuSE Linux 10.1 Status: NEW Severity: Blocker Priority: P5 - None Component: Installation AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: mauro.vittorini@telecomitalia.it QAContact: jsrain@novell.com Dear Madam or Sir, first excuse me for my bad English. I have a PC based on a ASUS P4V8X-MX (VIA P4M800M) motherboard, on which was working OpenSuSE 10.1. Yesterday I tried to install OpenSuSE 10.2, but the whole installation failed during the installation of the Grub boot manager, with an error message like the following one: GRUB > setup -- stage2 = /boot/grub/stage2 (hd0) (/dev/hdd,1) error 23 : while parsing number I think this error is due to the fact that the SATA RAID controller (VIA VT8237R Plus south bridge) of the motherboard is not properly recognised by the installation process, even if no RAID is working since there is only one HDD in JBOD mode and the RAID feature in the BIOS is disabled. Is there any patch or workaround to solve this problem? Is it normal that now when the system start-up there are both the option of booting OpenSuSE 10.1 and OpenSuSE 10.2, even if this last option clearly does not work at all? I hope in a fast solution to this critical trouble. Thank you very much. https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=227881 ------- Comment #4 from mauro.vittorini@telecomitalia.it 2006-12-19 15:53 MST ------- Finally I was able to install the 10.2, but before I had to format the HDD. Maybe the installer (YAST ?) does not work properly if it finds in the drive anoteher Suse release. Thank you and best regard. Without logs, I fear I have to close this bug, as it works now. And the information you gave just allows guessing. For some reason, the mapping from kernel-device to grub-device did not work in the initial report, therefore you have a broken /boot/grub/device.map This apparently was done with disabled RAID. In Comment #3, the RAID is enabled (at least there is a RAID detected by device mapper, but still the mapping to Grub notation didn't work. Why it finally worked - I don't know. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
