So the first installation steps had to be done offline. I simply chose "Gnome" desktop for installation on a reiserfs-/-partition. The system froze on the first boot while configuring things (desktop,WLAN) short after an error box of PackageKit. I repeated this twice - again the system froze just within minutes after first boot (and subsequent boots too once the error showed up). I gave up on this computer. - I read about the reported Beagle+Reiserfs-bug - I installed openSuSE 11 on my desktop-PC (which is only temporarily connected to the Internet via Modem) knowing I had probably not to select reiserfs. I partitioned my PC as I depicted earlier (several ext3-Partitions, one big reiserfs-partition on my second HD (for Debian Etch mainly)). I installed the system even twice with 'packagekit' (=not deselecting it) : Also this system froze within minutes after first boot (being offline, packagekit popped up error windows right after the desktop showed up) - Finally I installed again on my desktop-PC, now explicitly deselecting 'packagekit': The system worked fine. This weekend I did a final test on this subject: I made a rather full fresh installation (with nearly all software packages) just without 'packagekit': Everything works fine - even Beagle is running without any problems on my reiserfs-partition - and that I really tested hard. I can only conclude: Packagekit is either the problem itself (especially is the computer is offline - it does at least cause windows to pop up) or necessary for the problem to show - anyway, without packagekit I have a system that is running perfectly without any anomalies for two day now (and I really made a lot of beagle tests). The /var/log/messages shows nothing of relevance - after the crashs occured that was one of the first things I checked; I don't have proof any more but the log showed nothing unusual; now that the system is running without errors the log files read identical to before. Confusing is, of course, that postinstalling 'packagekit' does not freeze the system within minutes - maybe I didn't wait long enough or some strange conditions make this error to only show up on a fresh installation. I tried to figure out how I could assist you in locating this bug; since logfiles aren't helpful here I can only guess of course: I strongly suspect that packagekit causes (or benefits) this error if no internet connection is available. Anyway, now that I was able to successfully install openSuSE 11 twice just deselecting packagekit (even involving reiserfs and beagle) I am completely satisfied - I realize, of course, that this is not a perfect solution.
