[Bug 228039] New: IP V6 - causing connection delays - cannot be switched off
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=228039 Summary: IP V6 - causing connection delays - cannot be switched off Product: SUSE Linux 10.1 Version: Final Platform: Other OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: Network AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: towo@computer.org QAContact: qa@suse.de I have delays of 12-18 seconds when opening a TCP connection. It is caused by a DSL router which drops IP V6 packets ignorantly (rather than handling or rejecting them) and by the timeout applied before the system retries with IP V4. This is confirmed by the "disableIPv6" option that firefox offers locally; setting it to true fixes the problem for web access but not for any access outside firefox (command line ftp/ssh etc). So how can IP V6 be disabled completely in the system? This is with SUSE 10.1, in contrast to the same effect described in bug #200180 which suggests that it can be disabled by yast in 10.2. (Also I think it's different from bug #147656 and bug #147075 which describe missing IP V6 functionality if I understand them right.) I found advice on the Internet (also referred to in bug #200180) to manipulate one of /etc/modules.conf or /etc/modprobe.conf (depending on SUSE release) and set either: alias net-pf-10 off or: alias net-pf-10 ipv6 install ipv6 /bin/true Nothing works. I also tried in /etc/sysconfig/SuSEfirewall2: FW_IPv6_REJECT_OUTGOING="yes" Nothing works. Since this interworking problem is not too exotic (there are other reports, in other network situations too, including with external servers), I consider this a major bug. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

Additionally you can attach output from ifconfig here. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=228039 ------- Comment #5 from towo@computer.org 2007-01-04 18:09 MST ------- I found some explanations of the problem: http://www.frameip.com/nntp/article-linux-debian-maint-ipv6.php?numero=1683 http://www.ubuntuforums.org/archive/index.php/t-77686.html http://atm.tut.fi/list-archive/nanog/msg37148.html but no solution. I can image a solution with a local nameserver that handles the issue, rejecting IPv6 requests and forwarding IPv4 requests to the external nameserver. Any advice how to install such a device on SUSE Linux? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=228039 ------- Comment #6 from towo@computer.org 2007-01-10 01:53 MST ------- I found that the explanations quoted in comment #5 can easily be confirmed: - telnet google.com 80 has the delay (20s) - ping google.com gives the IP address - telnet 72.14.207.99 80 (google.com IP address) works properly, no delay Also, the problem can be avoided by making an entry to /etc/hosts. So, following some hints from the information quoted in comment #5, it is most probably a glibc bug, might also be a kernel problem, though. Please add glibc component/maintainers to the listeners of this bug report, and please get if fixed... Also, obviously a local DNS server gateway could easily fix the issue as a workaround, but it is far from obvious how to install such a thing. Please also give some advice here (as a means of bug resolution). -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=228039 ------- Comment #7 from towo@computer.org 2007-01-10 01:55 MST ------- Created an attachment (id=112154) --> (https://bugzilla.novell.com/attachment.cgi?id=112154&action=view) script to add IP address entry to /etc/hosts As I noted in comment #6, the bug can be avoided for specific hosts by making an entry to /etc/hosts. The attached script makes this entry for convenience. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
