The DejaVu fonts are better in my opinion than the Liberation fonts. But the default desktop font has nothing to do with document interoperability. A document which requests "Times New Roman" or "Arial" will get these fonts if they are installed, if not it will get replacements setup for these fonts in /etc/fonts. Currently, if "Times New Roman" is not available, "Thorndale AMT" and "Nimbus No9 L" are tried as replacements in that order, if "Arial" is not installed "Albany AMT" and "Nimbus Sans L" are tried as replacements in that order. The Liberation fonts (metric compatible to Arial, Times New Roman and Courier New) should be added as yet another fallback for these 3 Microsoft fonts, with lower priority than the Agfa fonts (i.e. Thorndale AMT and Albany AMT) but with higher priority as the URW fonts (Nimbus *) because they are intermediate in quality between the Agfa and the URW fonts. The current rendering quality and Unicode coverage of the Liberation fonts is not anywhere near as good as the DejaVu fonts. Also improvement has been promised, nothing seems to be done. Whereas the development of the DejaVu fonts progresses nicely. The Desktop is not a document. Formatted documents OpenOffice, Abiword, whatever ... specify a font somewhere.
