[Bug 292887] New: "iwlist eth0 scanning essid" fails to honor essid with ipw2100
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=292887 Summary: "iwlist eth0 scanning essid" fails to honor essid with ipw2100 Product: openSUSE 10.3 Version: Alpha 5plus Platform: i386 OS/Version: openSUSE 10.3 Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Mobile Devices AssignedTo: behlert@novell.com ReportedBy: gp@novell.com QAContact: qa@suse.de CC: marc.ruehrschneck@novell.com Found By: Product Management The man page for the "scanning" section of "iwlist" says: This command take optional arguments, however most drivers will ignore those. The option essid is used to specify a scan on a specific ESSID. The option last do not trigger a scan and read left-over scan results. And indeed the ipw2100 fails to honor the essid specification. # iwlist eth0 scanning essid gccsummit eth0 Scan completed : Cell 01 - Address: 00:03:52:29:D7:C0 ESSID:"Congress" Protocol:IEEE 802.11bg Mode:Master Channel:2 Frequency:2.417 GHz (Channel 2) Encryption key:off Bit Rates:5.5 Mb/s; 11 Mb/s; 6 Mb/s; 9 Mb/s; 12 Mb/s 18 Mb/s; 24 Mb/s; 36 Mb/s; 48 Mb/s; 54 Mb/s Quality:62 Signal level:0 Noise level:0 Extra: Last beacon: 188ms ago Cell 02 - Address: 00:03:52:E3:6D:C0 ESSID:"Capital Level" Protocol:IEEE 802.11bg Mode:Master Channel:3 Frequency:2.422 GHz (Channel 3) Encryption key:off Bit Rates:1 Mb/s; 2 Mb/s; 5.5 Mb/s; 11 Mb/s; 6 Mb/s 9 Mb/s; 12 Mb/s; 18 Mb/s; 24 Mb/s; 36 Mb/s 48 Mb/s; 54 Mb/s Quality:86 Signal level:0 Noise level:0 Extra: Last beacon: 120ms ago Cell 03 - Address: 00:1C:0E:27:2A:73 ESSID:"gccsummit" Protocol:IEEE 802.11bg Mode:Master Channel:6 Frequency:2.437 GHz (Channel 6) Encryption key:on Bit Rates:1 Mb/s; 2 Mb/s; 5.5 Mb/s; 6 Mb/s; 9 Mb/s 11 Mb/s; 12 Mb/s; 18 Mb/s; 24 Mb/s; 36 Mb/s 48 Mb/s; 54 Mb/s Quality:48 Signal level:0 Noise level:0 IE: WPA Version 1 Group Cipher : TKIP Pairwise Ciphers (1) : TKIP Authentication Suites (1) : PSK IE: IEEE 802.11i/WPA2 Version 1 Group Cipher : TKIP Pairwise Ciphers (1) : CCMP Authentication Suites (1) : PSK Extra: Last beacon: 64ms ago : Cell 33 - Address: 00:03:52:2B:A1:70 ESSID:"Congress" Protocol:IEEE 802.11bg Mode:Master Channel:9 Frequency:2.452 GHz (Channel 9) Encryption key:off Bit Rates:5.5 Mb/s; 11 Mb/s; 6 Mb/s; 9 Mb/s; 12 Mb/s 18 Mb/s; 24 Mb/s; 36 Mb/s; 48 Mb/s; 54 Mb/s Quality:33 Signal level:0 Noise level:0 Extra: Last beacon: 1676ms ago Cell 34 - Address: 00:1C:0E:27:2A:C1 ESSID:"<hidden>" Protocol:IEEE 802.11bg Mode:Master Channel:6 Frequency:2.437 GHz (Channel 6) Encryption key:on Bit Rates:1 Mb/s; 2 Mb/s; 5.5 Mb/s; 6 Mb/s; 9 Mb/s 11 Mb/s; 12 Mb/s; 18 Mb/s; 24 Mb/s; 36 Mb/s 48 Mb/s; 54 Mb/s Quality:33 Signal level:0 Noise level:0 IE: WPA Version 1 Group Cipher : TKIP Pairwise Ciphers (1) : TKIP Authentication Suites (1) : PSK IE: IEEE 802.11i/WPA2 Version 1 Group Cipher : TKIP Pairwise Ciphers (1) : CCMP Authentication Suites (1) : PSK Extra: Last beacon: 12212ms ago In environments with many networks and cells, this is a real pain. I believe this should be fixed in the ipw2100 driver. Is this something we could contribute or escalate to Intel for fixing? (I also recommend testing ipw2200, ipw3945, and ipw4975?) -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Improving documentation is always a good thing, so you are free to report this upstream. ;-)
I don't even know where upstream is and I don't think that "Go upstream" is the best of answers in such a case, but... ..here is a patch which I verified still applies against what we have in FACTORY as of two days ago. :-) Stefan, would you mind help pushing this upstream? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
