And why would gnuplot probe a Japanese or Chinese on startup in a utf-8 English console? My setup is KDE based, w/console, in a totally default English/US install. The same thing happens under XFCE, with XFCE-Terminal. I've verfified that after unset ${!LC_*} export LANG=POSIX gnuplot the message disappear. If an UTF-8 encoding is choosen with export en_US-UTF-8 gnuplot the message is enabled again but has no influence on the plot of `plot(sin(x))'.
