https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=256783 ------- Comment #1 from mfabian@novell.com 2007-03-22 12:05 MST ------- xterm version is xterm-224 with the patch ftp://invisible-island.net/temp/xterm-224i.patch.gz added. (patch was added to see whether bug #246573 is fixed now. I think the problem reported here has nothing to do with the patch.) -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=256783 ------- Comment #2 from mfabian@novell.com 2007-03-22 12:14 MST ------- For testing the Xft support, I added the following lines to my ~/.Xresource file: XTerm*faceName: monospace XTerm*faceNameDoublesize: monospace XTerm*faceSize: 12 This works and when I execute just “xterm" in ja_JP.UTF-8 locale, xterm uses “MS Gothic”both for single and double width glyphs which works fine now (“MS Gothic” is matched by “fc-match monospace” in ja_JP.UTF-8 locale on my system). But then, when I start xterm with the -fn option xterm -fn fixed the behaviour is unchanged, it still uses Xft and not X11 core fonts. I.e. the option “-fn” doesn't override the *faceName resource. But I guess it should do that, the resource should only specify the default when no options are given, shouldn't it? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=256783 ------- Comment #3 from dickey@his.com 2007-03-22 13:25 MST ------- The "-fa" option sets faceName, not "-fn". -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=256783 mfabian@novell.com changed: What |Removed |Added ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Status|RESOLVED |REOPENED Resolution|INVALID | ------- Comment #5 from mfabian@novell.com 2007-03-23 04:48 MST ------- Thomas Dickey> The "-fa" option sets faceName, not "-fn". Yes, I know and I know that I can change to a font different from the one configured in the faceName resource. But that doesn't change the fact of course that xterm still uses Xft. I cannot see any way to switch temporarily to X11 core fonts using a command line option. I had expected that “-fn fixed” overrides faceName and forces the use of the X11 core font with the alias fixed. Even if one wants to use xterm mainly with fonts rendered via Xft and therefore adds the resource faceName to ~/.Xresources, one might still want to start xterm from time to time with X11 core fonts. For example, when there is a problem with freetype/fontconfig and all applications using that crash. Then it is nice to be able to open at least a terminal to be able to fix the problem. Or, when I am running a complete update to the current factory version of openSUSE, which I am doing maybe every 2 weeks. Such an update of course installs all the font packages again, i.e. the fontconfig cache files are out of date almost all the time while the update is running. When one starts an application using fontconfig/Xft during that time, it will almost certainly find that the caches are out of date and generate user specific caches in ~/.fontconfig. This takes several minutes because I have lots of fonts installed. I.e. an xterm then takes several minutes to start. And when one tries to start the next xterm, most likely another font package has been updated in the meantime and it takes several minutes again to start because it generates the caches again. I.e., even if one usually prefers "xterm -fa", one might want to start "xterm -fn" from time to time. I think that should be easily possible with the command line options. But currently it is not, one has to remove faceName from the X resources and add it back later which is quite inconvenient. → REOPEN. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=256783 ------- Comment #6 from dickey@his.com 2007-03-23 13:46 MST ------- There's a resource setting which does what you want (not all resources have command-line switches). Here is an example: xterm -fa 'Andale Mono' -xrm '*renderFont:false' -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

I didn't know that. I'll close this as WORKSFORME then. https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=256783 ------- Comment #8 from dickey@his.com 2007-03-23 17:55 MST ------- yes - either way, the effect should be to bring up xterm able to switch _to_ TrueType fonts, but not currently using them. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
