Hi,
I try to use cpufreq Support on my new Laptop with Intel Core 2.
By starting my system i can read, that there is no support for cpufreq.
This is my output from cat /proc/cpuinfo

On modprobe speedstep-centrino i get this
FATAL: Error inserting speedstep_centrino
(/lib/modules/2.6.18.2-34-default/kernel/arch/i386/kernel/cpu/cpufreq/speedstep-centrino.ko):
No such device
And on modprobe acpi-cpufreq i get this

No such device
Im not sure, if this module is needed, but a modprobe p4-clockmod gets this
FATAL: Error inserting p4_clockmod
(/lib/modules/2.6.18.2-34-default/kernel/arch/i386/kernel/cpu/cpufreq/p4-clockmod.ko):

And the kernel prints out this lines

This is the wrong module! It shouldn't tried to be loaded.
It should be speedstep-centrino or acpi_cpufreq. Please check your BIOS configuration whether you have an option to enable cpufreq there. Also check whether you have the latest BIOS. This one seems to be unrelated to bug #227765, because there the cpufreq modules at least get loaded. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

The strange thing is that when I flash the old bios F03 cpufreq works like a charm. When I flash the newer F05 bios cpufreq is no longer working and the cpu keeps running at a stock speed of 1,83ghz. Staying at bios version F03 is no option for me since there are some nasty bugs with the wifi card failing after some time and the keyboard no longer working after a reboot. I havo no ACPI or suspend state settings in my bios but I think it has to do with the new bios adding support for the new core 2 duo so it might do something to the speedstepping. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

CPU frequency was broken on his HP with BIOS version F14 (and some others?), but started working again with BIOS version F17. Please also check whether you can configure related BIOS settings. Does speedstep-centrino or acpi-cpufreq module still load? This sounds like a BIOS bug. If modules even cannot be loaded anymore I like to set this one to invalid or works for me again. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

On my HP NC6400 with a Core Duo T2400 and bios revision F05 cpufreq loads but won't switch frequanties, also the gnome cpufreq applet tells me that it's not supported. One thing I noticed is that the F05 revision of the bios adds Core 2 Duo support. I've seen the same thing happening with a classmate he has some fancy looking Asus notebook of which he upgraded the bios and the revision he installed added support for the Core 2 Duo (on which he's planning to buy) and just after upgrading cpufreq stopped working. I don't think this can be a coincidence so I'm quite sure that the newer biosses that support the Core 2 Duo handle the speedstep routines in a different way. On Windows XP however, speedstepping has never stopped working. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

Additional work has been done after 2.6.18 and it would be great if you could try a 2.6.20 kernel. Olaf is currently pushing our kernel cvs from 2.6.18 to 2.6.20 and he said he should be finished this week. There should pop out a 2.6.20 kernel-default rpm in some days then here (you can check version with rpm -qpi kernel-default.rpm, must be 2.6.20.xy): ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/projects/kernel/kotd/i386/HEAD/ This is the easiest way to try this. If you don't find a kernel-default.(i586.).rpm there at the end of the week, pls ping me and I have a look, there is sometimes trouble with ftp syncing. Can you still pls check whether you run the latest BIOS. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

I hope I can install it trough yast because I don't now how to compile and install a kernel manually. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
On my HP NC6400 with a Core Duo T2400 and bios revision F05 cpufreq loads but won't switch frequanties I also have/had a nc6400 here and cpufreq works fine. There was a problem that not the highest freq is reached but that should be fixed. There also was a problem with waking up from C2 which also influenced cpufreq,

The next 10.2 kernel update should come out in some days with those fixes. I close this for now. Please reopen if you should still have problems after next kernel update. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=229242 ------- Comment #13 from rob.kruit@newdata.stx.nl 2007-02-28 05:22 MST ------- I don't have a problem with the highest freq not being reached. My problem is that the CPU keeps running at the highest freq and not supporting cpufreq at all. I tried to install the 2.6.20 kernel before I went on vacation but it had no effect. During my vacation my notebook was stolen but it was covered by ensurance so I got a new one with a newer bios version on it and guess what cpufreq works like a charm. So I think it has something to do with how the bios handles speedstepping and how cpufreq reacts on that because I never had such problems under windows. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
