Did you install the latest kernel-firmware package?
No, it is using the same firmware packages as the 4.0 and 3.xx kernel versions. I wasn't aware of an specific firmware package needed, and I assumed that having kernel 4.0 working without needing additional packages I was not going to need one for 4.1 either. I can't try until next week, but if you give a link to the updated firmware package I'll try it next week. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

Up to 4.0.x, there was some support for the deprecated firmware API, but primarily the driver already expected the new firmware. You can find the following messages even in 4.0.x kernel log:
[ 10.992352] iwlwifi 0000:08:00.0: Direct firmware load for iwlwifi-3160-12.ucode failed with error -2 [ 10.992365] iwlwifi 0000:08:00.0: Direct firmware load for iwlwifi-3160-11.ucode failed with error -2 [ 10.992374] iwlwifi 0000:08:00.0: Direct firmware load for iwlwifi-3160-10.ucode failed with error -2 [ 10.992376] iwlwifi 0000:08:00.0: request for firmware file 'iwlwifi-3160-10.ucode' failed.
After that, it falls back: [ 11.395725] iwlwifi 0000:08:00.0: Firmware has old API version, expected v10 through v12, got v9. [ 11.395728] iwlwifi 0000:08:00.0: New firmware can be obtained from http://www.intellinuxwireless.org/.
This fallback was dropped in 4.1.x.
The update kernel-firmware should be found in OBS Kernel:HEAD and Kernel:stable repos.
Thanks, I can't install the firmware packages until next week, so you'll not hear back until then. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

Meanwhile the upstream tree released *-13 ucode, so I updated kernel-firmware package, too.
Sorry for the late reply. I installed the kernel-firmware package from kernel-stable repo (provider obs://build.opensuse.org/Kernel) zypper info says kernel-firmware is version is 20150715it-35.1 and kernel-desktop is reported 4.1.2-1.1.g5ccacb4, both from the same provider. WiFi is working (I'm posting this running these kernel and firmware packages) So your diagnostic was spot on. Thanks again for your support. Are you're planning to somehow package together the latest kernel and firmware packages? Otherwise people with old kernels upgrading to the next OpenSUSE release could also run into this problem. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.
