AS for compiz vs. compiz-1, this is indeed an upstream change, as the configuration files are not considered compatible (same reasoning we had back in the time to switch to compizconfig-1 with nomad). An updated compiz-manager has been submitted to X11:Compiz. Thanks for your testing and reporting Andreas! As for gnome-wm: it does start compiz-manager. But the gcc bug was actually in serialization which triggered various weird things.
