[Bug 210204] New: Poor XFS performance under 10.1 with many files
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=210204 Summary: Poor XFS performance under 10.1 with many files Product: SUSE Linux 10.1 Version: Final Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Basesystem AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: detlef@die-mafia.de QAContact: qa@suse.de I use xfs since SUSE 9.2, i'm very happy with good performance of xfs. But on 10.1, xfs has problems with write/read of many files. I setup my pc with SUSE 10.1 twice with all updates (incl new kernel-update), one with xfs and one with ext3, both on the same hd: samsung sata 160gb, SiI 3512 [SATALink/SATARaid] Serial ATA Controller. Test with big files: ext3: ----- time dd if=/dev/zero of=/build/testfile bs=1M count=1024 1024+0 records in 1024+0 records out 1073741824 bytes (1.1 GB) copied, 13.1206 seconds, 81.8 MB/s real 0m14.456s user 0m0.004s sys 0m3.276s time cp /build/testfile /build/testfile1 real 0m48.515s user 0m0.036s sys 0m3.948s time rm /build/* real 0m1.444s user 0m0.000s sys 0m0.436s xfs: ---- time dd if=/dev/zero of=/build/testfile bs=1M count=1024 1024+0 records in 1024+0 records out 1073741824 bytes (1.1 GB) copied, 12.3374 seconds, 87.0 MB/s real 0m12.417s user 0m0.000s sys 0m2.000s time cp /build/testfile /build/testfile1 real 0m43.686s user 0m0.048s sys 0m2.708s time rm /build/* real 0m0.206s user 0m0.000s sys 0m0.112s Ok, looks good, xfs is a little bit faster. But now test with y2pmbuild, many files in variable size. y2pmbuild have to create a fresch chroot in an empty directory. ext3: ----- time y2pmbuild knemo.spec real 3m29.911s user 1m31.446s sys 0m28.658s time rm -r /build/* real 0m5.533s user 0m0.036s sys 0m1.148s xfs: ---- time y2pmbuild knemo.spec real 7m27.520s user 1m31.230s sys 0m30.318s time rm -r /build/* real 2m3.613s user 0m0.036s sys 0m3.228s This looks not fine for xfs. :( -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

Please refer to the XFS FAQ here: http://oss.sgi.com/projects/xfs/faq.html#wcache and try "-o nobarrier" mount option. Please also note that using this option may be dangerous as explained in the FAQ. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
