[Bug 684752] New: mplayer: hangs up entire system
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=684752 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=684752#c0 Summary: mplayer: hangs up entire system Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.4 Version: Final Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Critical Priority: P5 - None Component: Basesystem AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: bluedzins@wp.pl QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: --- Important remark: this issue is two-fold, one is mplayer itself, the second is system/kernel. If there is a need for two reports, please let me know. It happened already several times, however it is not predictable in sense of numbers. Steps: 1, watch movie (SMplayer/Mplayer) 2. at some points video is frozen, and audio goes in a short loop of one audio "phrase" 3. at this point _entire_ system is dead The issues: * mplayer -- it would be better if mplayer simply worked as before -- normal bug * kernel -- no user level piece of software should be able to put down entire system -- this is critical bug, so I set up severity as critical (*) (*) in normal conditions I could close buggy software, and rerun it, however when the system hangs up, I lose all my data, all the processing, I have to start all over I am not including stack trace or anything like that, because there none. Please let me know how I could help solving this issue. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

and then running 'yast2 kdump'.
and enabling there kdump, which alters boot partition. OK, done.
When you reboot, it will do the rest automatically.
Done
When you go to reproduce it,
I did, entire system froze, audio was in the loop as I described before. Nothing else happened. I had to turn off computer and turn it on.
the system should kexec and dump the memory
I don't know if it did, because I am not sure about kexec, and at what stage it should kick in. Anyway, where is the memory dump? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

An alternative is to use a serial console if you have another PC with a serial port available.
I forgot, I have another PC with OS11.1, but the problem is not with computer but with port -- I don't have any computer with such port. USB, Firewire, eSata, all fancy ports -- yes, no RS232 though. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Are you able to connect to the frozen system via the network while it's hung?
Nope. I connected to computer, started Mplayer, and when the system froze I couldn't type a single letter on the other computer in SSH window. Just in case, I tried to connect again (another session), but I was unable to do it. Just like the computer with MPlayer was disconnected at all. What can I do next? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
