[Bug 729795] New: 64bit kernel does not boot from installation cd
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=729795 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=729795#c0 Summary: 64bit kernel does not boot from installation cd Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 12.1 Version: Factory Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: openSUSE 11.4 Status: NEW Severity: Enhancement Priority: P5 - None Component: Kernel AssignedTo: kernel-maintainers@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: admin@igpm.rwth-aachen.de QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.9.2.8) Gecko/20100723 SUSE/3.6.8-1.1.1 Firefox/3.6.8 Hello, I have the following system: Gigabyte GA-990FXA-UD7 Motherboard with 16 GB Ram and 6 EVGA Nvidia Graphic Cards. The 32 bit Version of OpenSuse boots and installs without problems. The only thing is, that when I use the top command, the available free memory is only about 500 MB. The 64Bit Version loads the kernel and then freezes. This happens with different Operating System / kernel versions. Now when I reduce the memory with mem=4000M, the kernel boots and I can install the operating system. The available free memory is the same as with the 32bit system, about 500MB. When the mem parameter is choosed bigger than 4096GB, the system won't boot. Then I installed the xen virtualization software on the 64bit system, I added the boot parameter mem=16384M and the xen system kernel boots then without problems. Also the available free memory is shown correctly. Which kernel configuration does the trick, that I can install a standard non virtualized kernel on this system? regards Frank Knoben Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. 64bit kernel loads from cd / dvd then kernel freezes 2. after adding the mem=anything below 4GB parameter, the kernel boots 3. 32bit kernel boots without any additional parameter 4. xen 64bit version boots without problems / crash I think, the problem has something to do with using 6 pci-x graphics cards in the system. Somehow the i/o address range are not mapped / recognized correctly when booting the 64bit standard system. I did not remove the graphic cards one by one to verify this, so I'm not sure, if my assumption is correct. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

What does the display show before the kernel freezes?
The kernel freezes directly after loading into memory. There is no error message. When I add the boot option 'iommu=noaperture' everything is fine and the system boots without problem. So maybe, this is a bios problem of the motherboard. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
