[Bug 218948] New: Resizing Vista NTFS partitions may keep Vista from booting.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=218948 Summary: Resizing Vista NTFS partitions may keep Vista from booting. Product: openSUSE 10.2 Version: Beta 1 plus Platform: Other OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Critical Priority: P5 - None Component: Installation AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: kernel01@hailfinger.org QAContact: jsrain@novell.com On the NTFS-devel mailing list, I have seen a few reports that Windows Vista RC is unable to boot after any of the NTFS partitions it accesses are resized. The ntfsresize FAQ also mentions possible problems. See http://mlf.linux.rulez.org/mlf/ezaz/ntfsresize.html#vista for details. Unfortunately, it seems that there is no easy way to determine whether a given NTFS partition is accessed by Vista. The linux-ntfs developers are currently investigating a solution or at least reliable Vista detection. It might make sense to add a warning to the resizing dialog for NTFS partitions. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

My idea is to check for the
transactional directory. However this won't be enabled by default, so it may not exist at all.
We currently check for the presence two files: /bootmgr and /Boot/BCD
I'm afraid, this is not ok for data partitions, which seemingly also have the same problem. I suppose data partitions don't have the above two files, do they?" -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=218948 ------- Comment #3 from sh@novell.com 2006-11-08 08:01 MST ------- We already have a really verbose warning popup for that. It basically says "use at your own risk, your Windows might not work any more afterwards". I don't see any need for wording changes here, and it's much too late in the development cycle for that anyway. Any wording change would only mean that all translations get broken and that none of the users who don't speak English would understand that warning at all (since it would be posted in English only). -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

He said that in the past most problems of that kind could be worked around by using Grub as the master boot loader rather than the Windows boot loader (-> downgrading from CRITICAL to NORMAL). -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=218948 ------- Comment #9 from kernel01@hailfinger.org 2006-11-28 03:28 MST ------- If we ever have a remastered version of 10.2, it might be sensible to merge the fix. Please note that the bugfix has not yet beeen confirmed. I'll keep you updated. Anton Altaparmakov says:
Argh! Thank you for persisting with this. I have now looked at the code and you are right it does not do the same thing. This is because when Yura ported my $LogFile code from the kernel for some unknown to me (or forgotten by me) reason he did not integrate clearing the journal into the mount process. He integrated the checking but not the clearing. This is a HUGE and VERY BAD bug in libntfs and means that all ntfs utilities are _DANGEROUS_ to run and can cause massive and very hard to detect data corruption. )-:
No wonder Vista does not boot!!! It is amazing it took so long to find this problem. I cannot believe we managed to get away with it for so long...
I have now fixed this in CVS.
