[Bug 360803] New: nVidia driver (X server) disabled after kernel upgrade
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=360803 User zaloha@volny.cz added comment https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=360803#c1 Summary: nVidia driver (X server) disabled after kernel upgrade Product: openSUSE 10.3 Version: Final Platform: i686 OS/Version: openSUSE 10.3 Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: Update Problems AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: zaloha@volny.cz QAContact: jsrain@novell.com Found By: Customer Short description: 1) driver for nVidia 8500GT is from nVidia official server and is (has to be*) installed via console (described e. g. on http://www.suse.de/~sndirsch/nvidia-installer-HOWTO.html#1) with installed kernel-source, gcc etc. All seems to be O.K. (*)BTW: the one-click install via *.ymp (likewise nvidia driver from repository, either via YAST or via Smart) doesn't work - the X server after such installation doesn't start. 2) problem after every kernel upgrade: X server doesn't start, sax2 doesn't work. The only solution to enable X-server is to change "nvidia" -> "nv" in /etc/X11/xorg.conf. Then I can repeat the console installation of nVidia driver and all is OK now....until tke following kernel update, of course... Isn't it a little bit stupid? Is there any solution (at least in development) to do all automatically? Kernell upgrade is relatively often and BFU is very frustrated (every user has not admin knowledges)... BTW2: on other older PC I have nVidia GeForce 2 with the same way of original nVidia driver installation (console, kernel-source, gcc) - all later kernel upgrades haven't any negative influence on nVidia driver (i. e. nVidia 3D function)... Thanks for reply and (better) for solution. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

The same person, who updates the kernel should also update the NVIDIA kernel module. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
