[Bug 270092] New: opensuse.org wiki does not point to downloadable software packages
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=270092
Summary: opensuse.org wiki does not point to downloadable
software packages
Product: openSUSE.org
Version: unspecified
Platform: Other
OS/Version: Other
Status: NEW
Severity: Normal
Priority: P5 - None
Component: wiki
AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com
ReportedBy: jw@novell.com
QAContact: adrian@novell.com
One goal for the wiki at opensuse.org should IMHO be to provide
assistance or guidance with the software package available for openSUSE.
The wiki fails this goal in several ways:
a) the search engine never returns software packages.
http://en.opensuse.org/Wishlist_Productivity is found, but there is no
positive list.
b) The link "download" in the left sidebar, points to Novell's openSUSE
releases only. http://software.opensuse.org/download/ is not mentioned
there.
c) The link "build service" points to http://en.opensuse.org/Build_Service
This details the internals of the buildservice, but has no hint, where
software built with the build service might be.
I strongly suggest to consider the following improvements:
I) The results page of the search engine should list
http://software.opensuse.org next to 'For more information about
searching openSUSE, see Searching openSUSE.'
II) http://software.opensuse.org/ should have its own search engine
(available without login) if searching the software repositories cannot be
integrated in the wiki search engine.
III)Encurage wiki users to try
http://www.google.com/search?q=site:software.opensuse.org+

In which case having those options available above might be a good idea. In general mediawiki's search really seems to suck (I repeatedly get complaints about this when I tell users to post on openSUSE.org); perhaps the solution might be using Google's search, since openSUSE.org seems to have a pretty high page rank now and it's well-indexed. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
