[Bug 392841] New: A step in GUI Installer to choose which applications/ services you do/do not want installed
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=392841 Summary: A step in GUI Installer to choose which applications/services you do/do not want installed Product: openSUSE 11.0 Version: Beta 3plus Platform: All OS/Version: All Status: NEW Severity: Enhancement Priority: P5 - None Component: Installation AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: donrhummy@yahoo.com QAContact: jsrain@novell.com Found By: Beta-Customer In the YaST2 GUI installer, there should be a step where the user can see all the applications and all the non-critical services that will be installed and uncheck any they do not want installed. You might see something like (in a better looking graphical manner): APPLICATIONS ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- NAME-------------CHECKBOX--INSTALLATION_FOLDER---DESCRIPTION SomeWebBrowser------X------/home/blahblah--------A web browser that blah blah SomeOfficeApp-------X------/home/office...-------Blah blah SERVICES ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- NAME-------------CHECKBOX--INSTALLATION_FOLDER---DESCRIPTION SomeFirewall--------X------/root/firewall--------A firewall that blah blah Then the user can check or uncheck any of those applications and/or non-essential services. I think this would be a HUGE feature. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Do you really think this should be an install step? What reason is there for doing this during install rather than after install? The important services like firewall/ssh which might prevent remote access to the installed machine are already asked during installation. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Being able to check/uncheck boxes would take the user just a few seconds. Uninstalling any apps/services after install could take up to an hour, and many times uninstall leaves your folders littered with useless files, etc. It's rarely as clean. I see a real benefit here. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

And we won't add more steps. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
