[Bug 256305] New: initramfs unpacking broken
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=256305 Summary: initramfs unpacking broken Product: openSUSE 10.3 Version: Alpha 2 Platform: Other OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: Kernel AssignedTo: kernel-maintainers@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: snwint@novell.com QAContact: qa@suse.de Unpacking the initrd (compressed cpio) truncates some files to length 0. On our alpha2 install CD this is /usr/local/bin/busybox. I've tested the same initrd (/boot/i386/loader/initrd on CD1) with an alpha1 (kernel-default-2.6.20-2) & alpha1plus kernel (kernel-default-2.6.20-6) and 2.6.20-2 worked but -6 did not. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=256305 snwint@novell.com changed: What |Removed |Added ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Severity|Major |Critical ------- Comment #3 from snwint@novell.com 2007-03-21 04:54 MST ------- At the moment it hits no vital file and you can still install. So I wouldn't make it a blocker. But I think Marcus sees it with other files in his initrd. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=256305 ------- Comment #4 from ms@novell.com 2007-03-21 05:02 MST ------- yes I don't make use of the busybox package. I see this problem on files like e2fsck and tune2fs which use for image deployment, so for me this is more critical -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

It can apparently load /init to start the installer, but when I alt-f4 to a shell, _nothing_ works. ls returns immediately, but "echo *" shows all the files in the directory. I can't verify that all the commands are 0 length, but it matches the behavior for something like that. Miklos, can you take a look at this one? Hannes is the mkinitrd maintainer, but I think he's pretty overloaded right now. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=256305 ------- Comment #6 from jeffm@novell.com 2007-03-21 15:43 MST ------- To be clear, this appears to be a kernel bug, not a bug in mkinitrd. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=256305 ------- Comment #8 from mszeredi@novell.com 2007-03-22 17:09 MST ------- BTW, I have no idea what actually causes this behavior, but loading the initrd twice seem to be wasteful and wrong anyway. Why not just load it once early, if needed, and omit the late load? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
