I finally went back and looked at the gnome-session-kdm-2.12.0-support.patch (I think that was the name) from gnome-session and the patch that we had in opensuse had been modified from the original patch in SLED. The name had not changed and there was no changelog entry for any modification. Anyway, I went and re-inserted the missing pieces from the patch with some minor tweaks and re-established the communication between gnome-session and KDM, and libssui and KDM.
