[Bug 329168] New: kernel parameter vga=xxx leads to lockup on kernel init
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=329168 Summary: kernel parameter vga=xxx leads to lockup on kernel init Product: openSUSE 10.3 Version: RC 1 Platform: i386 OS/Version: openSUSE 10.3 Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Kernel AssignedTo: kernel-maintainers@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: tabt@tabt.de QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: Other At least with 10.3 RC1 and Beta3 I have the problem that if I use e.g. vga=791 as a kernel parameter the kernel locks up on init, right after the boot loader loads kernel and initrd (regardless whether boot loader is GRUB or pxelinux). It does not seem to be connected to a specific graphics mode, all tested show the same effect. The system seems to get stuck, the keyboard Num-Lock and Caps-Lock LEDs are no longer responsive and the CPU fan slowly speeds up. A hard reset is the only way out. Using vga=ask then typing ENTER to get the list of (text) modes and e.g. choosing a 80x43 text mode works though. This problem did not occur with 10.2 or 10.1 (using same vga=791) The system consists of (relevant components at that stage): - AMD Athlon 64 X2 - Asus M2N-E SLI mainboard - MSI NVidia 8600GT graphics -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Likely the VESA BIOS call hangs for some reason. so,apparently hang can happen there, too ?
i have seen edd hang on several systems and kernel isn`t verbose at all when doing those bios calls - see arch/x86/boot/main.c (below). that`s why this will be more verbose, soon: http://git.kernel.org/?p=linux/kernel/git/hpa/linux-2.6-x86setup.git;a=commi... http://git.kernel.org/?p=linux/kernel/git/hpa/linux-2.6-x86setup.git;a=commi... maybe those other bios calls could need some more verbosity, too ? i think that`s sort of a "blind flight" at that stage, making it difficult to debug.... set_bios_mode(); /* Detect memory layout */ detect_memory(); /* Set keyboard repeat rate (why?) */ keyboard_set_repeat(); /* Set the video mode */ set_video(); /* Query MCA information */ query_mca(); /* Voyager */ #ifdef CONFIG_X86_VOYAGER query_voyager(); #endif /* Query Intel SpeedStep (IST) information */ query_ist(); /* Query APM information */ #if defined(CONFIG_APM) || defined(CONFIG_APM_MODULE) query_apm_bios(); #endif /* Query EDD information */ #if defined(CONFIG_EDD) || defined(CONFIG_EDD_MODULE) query_edd(); #endif /* Do the last things and invoke protected mode */ go_to_protected_mode(); -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
