[Bug 226330] New: Online update fails to load updates indicated by ZEN - but there is workaround
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=226330 Summary: Online update fails to load updates indicated by ZEN - but there is workaround Product: SUSE Linux 10.1 Version: Final Platform: i386 OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Critical Priority: P5 - None Component: Update Problems AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: alpha096@tpg.com.au QAContact: jsrain@novell.com ZEN indicated there was 1 update missing. I used on-line update and it found NO update - see screen shot. When I went into software management successfully and went to the bottom of the selection list and selected ZZZ All and then chose the menu option "in this list update if new version is available. Screen shot shows online update indicating Nothing to be installed and screen shot shows files being installed as a result of this workaround. Version 10.0 as I recall had NO issues at all with SUSE watcher and on-line update You can understand all and my frustrations and everyone else's. There have been so many versions of YOU during the life of version 10.1 it will go down as the release that could not update itself properly from day 1 and possible cannot do this correctly now. I understand that adhering to good development philosophy you never remove functionality that is suppose to be an enhancement and never revert to previous functionality. For 1 I would like SUSE watcher I don't know about you but the prospect of porting ZEN desktop updater from Novell has been an unwanted application. If the email support groups which discuss help group - most users are disabling the service. The only benefit ZEN has given us apart from headaches is the user has permanent escalated authority to install/uninstall software without root authority. IF it could apply new updates by itself ( which was part of the intended design of ZEN desktop updater so a company could distribute total applications or desktop updates on large networks under Windows) then it has merit. I feel quite strongly that giving the user the ability to install/delete not only software packages AND with just one tick the whole installation has provided NO helpful functionality and reading the group discussions it is despised and considered an internal security threat. With ZEN from day 1 we had on-line update issues that haunt us to this day and its interface with updating software via on-line update is highly questionable. What was the purpose of placing updating/deleting software in the users hands. IF ZEN was implemented in all its glory and was able to perform scheduled unattended updates it would be an advantage and that may be your thoughts. If it is not going to provide any further functionality than current - hard decisions need to be made as to is future trouble free running in further releases and made quickly now!
