[Bug 266505] New: usb2 HD crash at reading of much data on a slow PC
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=266505 Summary: usb2 HD crash at reading of much data on a slow PC Product: openSUSE 10.3 Version: Alpha 3 Platform: i586 OS/Version: openSUSE 10.3 Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: Kernel AssignedTo: kernel-maintainers@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: susebugzilla@online.de QAContact: qa@suse.de Hello, I connected a TEAC HD-35PU Harddisk with 500GB in an external USB2 case to a 800 MHz PC. The Harddisk is recongnized and automatically mounted. Before starting the badblock command I unmounted /dev/sdc1 by hand. I started the command badblock -v /dev/sdc1 to simulate reading of a big amount of data. After badblocks red about 140MB following error message appeared 5 times in sequence in /var/log/messages : "Apr 20 10:08:00 suse10-3-alpha kernel: usb 5-6: reset high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 8" and the blue LED on the external USB2 HD remains blinking forever until switching off the external power supply. In /var/log/messages can be seen, that further automatic remounts of the harddisk have no success. I did this test again on a quicker PC with 2000 MHz CPU and suse10.0 (after inserting the Kernel Patch for the TEAC Drive from https://lists.one-eyed-alien.net/pipermail/usb-storage/2007-January/0027999....) and it run successfully over the whole 500GB. It seems, that some changes in the timing of the ehci_hcd driver might cause this problem on slower PC's. https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=266505 ------- Comment #35 from oneukum@novell.com 2007-06-08 03:17 MST ------- Yes, sorry, the Ali controller please. Please do as you have suggested. You can leave the NEC controller in. There's no need to replace it, just add the presumably buggy controller. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=266505 ------- Comment #36 from susebugzilla@online.de 2007-06-08 06:19 MST ------- Hi, I made 2 badblock tests with patch #32, the first one with the NEC controller, wich was error free as expected and the second one with the ALI controller, which was "unexpected" also error free. With patch #32 the read-datarate was slow by 2,8 Megabytes/sec. So I think, the slow datarate produced a such low timing stress for the ALI controller, that it could handle it. By grepping for "ehci" in messages-32-ali I have seen only 2 reset messages at the beginning of the test. After this the reading run without ehci resets. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=266505 ------- Comment #44 from susebugzilla@online.de 2007-06-13 23:51 MST ------- Hello, during last weekend I let run the badblock test with the ALI controller and the patch #32 for a long time. The external HD stopped working after reading of 272 Gigabytes. I cut out the ehci error messages from the 7 Gigabyte /var/log/messages file, which was some effort because no editor could handle this filesize. So I used sed to cut out the message-parts. See file m10-mod in appendix. Next I will try a test with patch #42. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
