If the custom set is not found, or something like this, the default (hardcoded) set would be used. So I agree with you the default set should be hardcoded, for safety reasons. But additional set, external would be no harm in such case -- because the default set would always be there. I just run the KDE4.1 -- the artwork is simply _stunning_. Yast looks like old, cheap cousin (or worse). I am not complaing but face the fact -- skinning, theming, and adding your own custom artwork is pretty much standard nowadays. And artwork is done usually by artist, if you tell one to convert images to XPM, download the sources, patch them, recompile... He/she will be freaked out in the middle of the explanation. Stefan, with all respect, I am reopening (I hope you don't mind) this report and enhance the wish even further. Current wish: keep the default icons, images hardcoded but provide way for customize icons for whole yast in easy way for artists. All work should be: 1) create beautiful images 2) copy them to XYZ directory The main reason: I would like to see beautiful desktop from A-Z. Somebody comes up with an idea he thinks it's great. He thinks it can be done "if only you do this and that". But of course all features come with a cost. The cost of implementing it is the smallest part; much more expensive are the maintenance and debugging cost because of increased number of code paths, more potential for problems, in some cases (not here) also impact on performance. And of course there is increasing code bloat with each new thing added, which becomes a problem unto itself after a while. So each new feature has to be weighed in terms of benefit (which also includes how many users benefit from that feature) versus expected potential for problems and overall maintenance cost (each line of code needs to be revisited every once in a while). If only a very small number of users would want to have a feature, that benefit is very small, yet the cost for maintenance, debugging, and potential for problems is the same as for features wanted by a larger part of the user base. Coming back to the concrete issue addressed in this bug / enhancement report, I expect a very small number of users who will go through the trouble of making their own icons. Realistically, nobody tried any customizing with the stuff that is already there to customize - since years. If our user base decides the icons are bad and maybe even some community icon designer comes up with a better set, we should replace them for all users (there is another open bug about that in which you are CC'ed). I prefer keeping reports opened, not for you (so you feel the pressure) but for other people who browse through reports, and face it, if report is closed it is very unlikely that some person will take a look b.1) artwork -- if 11.0 will look like RC1 I change the icons by myself not because they are ugly (they are) but because I don't see what I am doing (I can't read those cryptic symbols) b.2) theming of yast has sense, because it is part of KDE, and if it is good for KDE to look great, it is at least reasonable for yast to match the KDE theme c) true, but believe me, MS didn't send me here to take your time, there is a loss on my side too, because I could play more tennis instead of thinking how to make OS better, right?
