[Bug 325917] New: 10.3 totally unusable in my laptop
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=325917 Summary: 10.3 totally unusable in my laptop Product: openSUSE 10.3 Version: Beta 3 Platform: Other OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Blocker Priority: P5 - None Component: Basesystem AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: sragavan@novell.com QAContact: qa@suse.de CC: anagappan@novell.com, pchenthill@novell.com Found By: --- I installed 10.3 on my laptop which was 10.2 earlier. It was a complete installation and it took 6 hours to install the packages. When I started my system, it booted fast enough (good) but the apps are too slow. A 'ls' in my terminal would take minutes. hdparm -t /dev/sda5 2MB in 60.1 seconds: 16 KB/s is the disk read. I have a desktop and 10.3 rocks there. My team has 10-15 of this laptops and when we put 10.3 in three of them, all the three laptops exhibits the same behaviour.y Im open to give whatever information/logs/file you want. If really required, you can login to my machine (inside the Novell's Firewall) and experience. The general experience is that there is no process taking 100% cpu, but then all the apps keep blocking for minutes (compiz greyout them) and gets back. CCing the other developers who faced this in their laptops. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Are you able to attach a serial cable and enable serial console to catch the hang on another machine? Hmm, the machine probably does not have a serial device?
You are right. I dont have a serial port in my laptop. While using the kernel that comes with 10.3 beta3 my machine boots fine and faster. But after logging in it is totally unusable. My hard disk access light keeps glowing all the time.
Some ideas: If it hangs or is slow, does constantly pressing a key (producing interrupts) make the machine faster again?
I am able to press keys. My CAPS lights and all glows. Just that it takes minutes to respond.
Does nohz=disable boot param help?
I will try this now.
If you hit e.g. the NUM lock key, does the LED get switched or is the machine totally dead?
The machine is very much active. Just that it takes a few mintues to respond.
If it is totally dead, you might want to do a picture where it hangs in text mode and attach it.
Ok when I tried the kernel from FACTORY, it just hang infinitely after "...Freed unused kernel ****" Dont remember the exact text. I will now boot with again without acpi=off and get the boot.msg and then try with nohz=disable. Thanks a lot for all your help guys. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Srinivasa: Could you try to: remove processor, thermal and fan entry from INITRD_MODULES in /etc/sysconfig/kernel and invoke mkinitrd. Then try to reboot without workaround parameters. processor module (activation of C-states) is done around libata modules get loaded in initrd. Maybe once the disk is settup correctly, the processor module can be loaded at later time.
I tried this and it is slow in this case also. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

FWIW If this worked with 10.2 and does not anymore with latest mainline kernel we have a regression and a bug in latest kernels, which is the base for our future
