[Bug 552785] New: virt-manager cannot connect to xend when started from an ordinary user's X session
http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=552785 Summary: virt-manager cannot connect to xend when started from an ordinary user's X session Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.2 Version: RC 2 Platform: All OS/Version: openSUSE 11.2 Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: Xen AssignedTo: jdouglas@novell.com ReportedBy: nice@titanic.nyme.hu QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux x86_64; en-US; rv:1.9.1.4) Gecko/20091016 SUSE/3.5.4-1.1.2 Firefox/3.5.4 Virt manager's desktop entry /usr/share/applications/YaST2/virt-manager.desktop doesn't instruct the desktop environment (or at least KDE) to attempt gaining root privileges by asking the root password from the user, so virt-manager will run as the user logged in to X. When an ordinary user logs in, virt-manager won't be able to connect to xend. Please fix /usr/share/applications/YaST2/virt-manager.desktop Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Log in as an ordinary user (not root) to KDE on openSUSE runing on a XEN kernel 2. Start virt-manager (Virtual Machine Manager) Actual Results: It won't be able to connect to xend Expected Results: It should ask for the root password, and thus running as root, in order to be able to connect. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux x86_64; en-US; rv:1.9.1.4) Gecko/20091016 SUSE/3.5.4-1.1.2 Firefox/3.5.4
Virt manager's desktop entry /usr/share/applications/YaST2/virt-manager.desktop doesn't instruct the desktop environment (or at least KDE) to attempt gaining root privileges by asking the root password from the user, so virt-manager will run as the user logged in to X.
When an ordinary user logs in, virt-manager won't be able to connect to xend. Please fix /usr/share/applications/YaST2/virt-manager.desktop
The virt-manager.desktop file already contains "X-SuSE-YaST-RootOnly=true" and when I launch virt-manager as a user either from the command line or yast menu I am prompted for a root password. I am using the final released version of 11.2. Please retry with the final release and report back. Also make sure xend is running - if it is not, commands like 'xm list' will also fail. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

The problem it that "X-KDE..." options are missing from the .desktop file (see vm-insall.desktop) and not "X-SuSE-YaST..." options. This is why it cannot be properly started from kickoff.
Please retry with the final release and report back. Also make sure xend is running - if it is not, commands like 'xm list' will also fail.
Even virt-manager itself is working when startet as root from the command line. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

2) As a paying customer, you will likely be better served to go through support first. That is at least in part what you are paying for :)
In fact I can use immense amounts of Novell licenses but these licenses were bought by the hungarian government for universities. Our university lobbied for this (in fact I was the one who wrote a letter for a member of the government). Our license codes are configured in a way, that currently doesn't permit me to choose the product I want support for, so SLES' support YaST module doesn't work for me (and for any of the universities in Hungary, I assume).
3) Because this is sle11 and not openSUSE 11.2, a new bug should be opened. As you have discovered, the platforms are very different.
OK, but I reassigned this bug to 11.1 which is very similar to SLES 11.
I will look into the problem on sle11.
Thank you very much. In fact I can use it without any bugfix by Novell, but the great number of very annoying bugs in SLES makes me very despairing. Why would anyone choose it instead of openSUSE, anyway? And the success stories on http://novell.com? I'm not even angry anymore, but sad and confused instead I thought that reporting hundreds of openSUSE bugs will make SLES better, and buying tons of licenses will also help you, but now... I'm even considering to return to Windows after ten years of using SuSE Linux exclusively :(((( -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

OK, after purchasing 100 SLES licenses, I started to migrate so SLES 11, but I'm profoundly shocked by its roughness. This bug also applies to SLES11, but it's even worse there because virt-manager won's start even after modifying /usr/share/applications/YaST2/virt-manager.desktop the same way as in openSUSE 11.2.
Can you fix it in SLES11, please?
You should be able to upgrade your SLES to sles11sp1 with a much newer hypervisor and tools (see also channel updates for sles11sp1/os11.3). SLES11 GA is now out of support. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
