[Bug 387702] New: High Temperature on Acer laptops, one powers off in Performance
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=387702 Summary: High Temperature on Acer laptops, one powers off in Performance Product: openSUSE 11.0 Version: Factory Platform: Other OS/Version: openSUSE 11.0 Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: Basesystem AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: sboyce@blueyonder.co.uk QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: --- My Acer 1501LCe powers off if I boot 11.0 Alpha onwards from CD/DVD, is OK with 10.3. It will generally get as far as software selection, then power down. Also if I try building a kernel with "powersave -f" set. Building a kernel, I have to set "powersave -l". The one difference I notice straight off is that 11.0 immediately puts the fan into high speed, I guess because that's because the DVD kernel sets it to Performance. On another laptop which doesn't suffer the same problem (travelMate 7520), though it looks to be on the high side while currently building a new kernel. With "powersave -A" and it's operating at max CPU speed. Kernel build completed successfully and it has dropped back to 800Mhz. processor : 0 vendor_id : AuthenticAMD cpu family : 15 model : 104 model name : AMD Turion(tm) 64 X2 Mobile Technology TL-58 stepping : 2 cpu MHz : 1900.000 cache size : 512 KB physical id : 0 siblings : 2 core id : 0 cpu cores : 2 apicid : 0 initial apicid : 0 fpu : yes fpu_exception : yes cpuid level : 1 wp : yes flags : fpu vme de pse tsc msr pae mce cx8 apic sep mtrr pge mca cmov pat pse36 clflush mmx fxsr sse sse2 ht syscall nx mmxext fxsr_opt rdtscp lm 3dnowext 3dnow rep_good pni cx16 lahf_lm cmp_legacy svm extapic cr8_legacy 3dnowprefetch bogomips : 3855.76 TLB size : 1024 4K pages clflush size : 64 cache_alignment : 64 address sizes : 40 bits physical, 48 bits virtual power management: ts fid vid ttp tm stc 100mhzsteps processor : 1 vendor_id : AuthenticAMD cpu family : 15 model : 104 model name : AMD Turion(tm) 64 X2 Mobile Technology TL-58 stepping : 2 cpu MHz : 1900.000 cache size : 512 KB physical id : 0 siblings : 2 core id : 1 cpu cores : 2 apicid : 1 initial apicid : 1 fpu : yes fpu_exception : yes cpuid level : 1 wp : yes flags : fpu vme de pse tsc msr pae mce cx8 apic sep mtrr pge mca cmov pat pse36 clflush mmx fxsr sse sse2 ht syscall nx mmxext fxsr_opt rdtscp lm 3dnowext 3dnow rep_good pni cx16 lahf_lm cmp_legacy svm extapic cr8_legacy 3dnowprefetch bogomips : 3855.76 TLB size : 1024 4K pages clflush size : 64 cache_alignment : 64 address sizes : 40 bits physical, 48 bits virtual power management: ts fid vid ttp tm stc 100mhzsteps # sensors k8temp-pci-00c3 Adapter: PCI adapter Core0 Temp: +56.0°C Core0 Temp: +60.0°C Core1 Temp: +56.0°C Core1 Temp: +57.0°C Temperature readings not changing throughout the build. I upgraded to 11.0 Beta3 using "zypper dup", now "powersave -f" says "Policy set to Performance", but the frequency doesn't move from 800Mhz. This was during a kernel build. This might be intended. You can monitor temperature: watch -n1 cat /proc/acpi/thermal_zone/*/* If the machine during high load (kernel compile) gets too hot the frequency will be reduced. You also should clean up your fan slots (vacuum cleaner, sometimes you even have to open the machine).
After some time, when the build finished and the machine cools down again, you can reach max_freq again, right? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Looks as though it has built-in self protection as it has now switched back to 800Mhz and 69 C without using the powersave command. It is not self protection. Or at least not BIOS controlled. At

Sometimes I get "good boots" and sometimes I get "bad boots".
Miguel, better stay on your original report, the machines are too different. I think I will connect all ThinkPad 11.0 temp bugs somehow and then try to ask mobile team for a reference machine. Or better they should look at it, I am off for holidays for some days. base stations..., something comes to my mind. We load the dock driver quite early now, maybe the ACPI functions there on the ThinkPad trigger something. Removing it may not be that easy, AFAIK ata drivers depend on it (that's why it is loaded that early). Holger how can the dock/bay driver be disabled? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
