[Bug 403699] New: yast printer set-up work-flow
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=403699 Summary: yast printer set-up work-flow Product: openSUSE 11.0 Version: Final Platform: Other OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: YaST2 AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: peebhat@gmail.com QAContact: jsrain@novell.com Found By: --- Look at how this is set-up 1.I open yast/printer module,it starts refreshing package cache. KDE Live CD is 644 MB.can't it include another 20 MB data for cups?Must you have an internet connection ON for setting up your first(also later)printer? Of course, you can stop it and continue. But only if package manager is not doing anything. (Must Yast refresh cache everytime? You install packages, close package manager,re-open it to install a few more.It refreshes cache again!Does it expect newer packages every minute?can't there be a time based algorithm for refreshment? Or like Synaptic, user initiated refreshment?I know OS 11.0 allows you to turn-off auto-refreshing,but that exactly(auto-refreshing) is setup by the OS.Even if it is on,why every minute refreshment? That's insane) 2.Now,it asks you what connection is your printer on? Non-geek cannot really understand this stuff. OK,I choose Network. 3.Now it lists various types of Network printers.Though I know a good bit about computers,it is still confounding.I choose 'direct print to a network printer'. 4.No,OS 11.0 cannot detect or attempts to detect. In the next dialog,I ask it to detect, but it fails.(Perhaps firewall. But should it not be able to adjust depending on what it needs to do?) Compare this with Ubuntu where it detects the same network printer,it's model and lists recommended driver). 5.At this stage, starting in OS 11.0,tabs are introduced.Your printer Model appears only in Basic settings tab,but you are initially led to printer optios tab which has a section halfway up from bottom for driver options. First, the tabs are not intuitive. As the navigation across tabs is manual, you may miss a few things and end up with a broken set-up.User should initially land up in Basic settings, but is landed up in printer options where without the model for the printer, she is supposed to set options. 6.KDE's own better, more capable printer set up dialog is removed. You are left with this dumb thing. The workflow is bad,it cannot detect network printers.( I cannot say about directly connected types),It needs to download printer drivers sleepily in the middle. This is an unhappy experience. Please, please look at what ubuntu and Gnome have done. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
