Take any PC with HDA ATI SB (IDT 92HD88B1) chipset 2. Install openSUSE 12.2 or 12.3 3. From alsa-info output, I see the headphone is being plugged. And this automatically shuts up the speaker output.

If so, it's the problem. The alsa-info attached here indicates that the headphone jack is present. This would imply that the jack detection mechanism on your machine is broken or not working in a normal way. What kind of machine is yours? A custom desktop? My machine is HP 625 notebook. I found in internet that many people have the same problem with this model. In Ubuntu it solves in some cases with alsa patches. And if the jack detection mechanism is broken, is there any way to get round it? By the procedure below, you can turn off the auto-mute feature, so that you can (must) adjust the speaker and the headphone volume/mute manually via alsamixer & co. 1. Create a file containing the following lines in /lib/firmware/alsa/no-hp-detect: [codec] 0x111d7667 0x103c1475 0 [hint] hp_detect = false 2. Add the following line to /etc/modprobe.d/99-local.conf (or whatever): options snd-hda-intel patch=alsa/no-hp-detect 3.
