[Bug 227378] New: system upgrade should not change any settings
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=227378 Summary: system upgrade should not change any settings Product: openSUSE 10.2 Version: Final Platform: i586 OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Installation AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: bluedzins@wp.pl QAContact: jsrain@novell.com Upgrade from 10.0 (kde 3.5.5) to 10.2 (kde 3.5.5). Now I have different fonts for menus, previously I didn't lock the screen, now it is locked, etc. It is wasting user's time -- users have to track down every app and check the settings to revert them to the previous. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=227378 ------- Comment #4 from bluedzins@wp.pl 2006-12-11 05:25 MST ------- Stephan, it does not make sense. I customized all my desktop to my taste for 10.0. Now I have to customize it again. I don't care about the default font for the menu -- I set it before to 15 pixels (example) and I would like to see it untouched. It is a waste of user time, non-productive, and clearly a sign about product (opensuse) low quality (sorry). The irony is here, I use KDE 3.5.5 on 10.0, now, I have the same KDE 3.5.5 but on 10.2. But I have to spend my time to get the settings back -- what is the point of this??? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=227378 ------- Comment #5 from coolo@novell.com 2006-12-11 05:32 MST ------- We don't change the menu font. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=227378 ------- Comment #6 from bluedzins@wp.pl 2006-12-11 07:58 MST ------- Stephan, maybe the problem is that user can change the settings, change them again but this time the settings are the same as the default ones. However, I report what I see -- I changed a lot things in the system, like fonts for menu, tips, and now I have to set it again. It is a bit frustrating because now I would rather resist next upgrade since it means more work, fruitless, for me. How many times the user should set "show the tips"? Or any other thing. I hope you agree that upgrade should be transparent -- i.e. everything should be newer, work faster and more reliable. But nothing more than that (by default). -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=227378 bluedzins@wp.pl changed: What |Removed |Added ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Status|RESOLVED |REOPENED Resolution|WONTFIX | ------- Comment #7 from bluedzins@wp.pl 2006-12-25 03:15 MST ------- I am reopening this report since I made an update on the second computer (10.0 -> 10.2) -- settings for my keyboard is changed (xkb settings), all system fonts are changed (Konqueror, KDE, name any app), the panel effects are turned on. I admit -- a lot of settings are preserved (good) but those are not, so for any user it is a time waster to restore the fonts. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

But we have to take in account that we're moving forward and therefore packages get replaced, e.g. new fonts used by default. Such problems as you report can be fixed during the beta phase of the products but nobody has reported them - and now it's too late to fix these. I invite you to test our alphas and betas for future products to really get a smooth update. Note that for most other users no problems occured - or they did not consider them as serious as you do. Coming back to your individual problems: You report a lot of different things and it's not clear what problems you actually really have. Next time please make a single bugreport for each issue. There's nothing we can do now for 10.2 - therefore closing as WONTFIX. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=227378 ------- Comment #13 from bluedzins@wp.pl 2007-01-10 03:49 MST ------- I know there is nothing you can do for 10.2 but I was reporting it just to help avoiding the problem in next release. And there is no problem in new fonts -- the problem is with deleting the old ones! (for example) There are maybe not many, but some, unreasonably changes which serves no purpose, hence I classify them as omission -- someone overlook the deletion of that and that piece. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=227378 ------- Comment #15 from alpha096@tpg.com.au 2007-01-25 17:35 MST ------- ATTN Maciiej - there are also other issues that I came across during update and yes I too was envied to test BETA software releases. In my case I had a KDE desktop, had deleted completely Kmail and installed evolution. After upgrade I was left with a system that contained Kmail only...which lead to other issues with Evolution with 10.2 where Evolution is unusable with a KDE desktop and Evolution is now dependant to a Gnome Keyring.... There were other changes and their were options I missed out on I.E to install ZEN or opensuse update icon. After my upgrade I had both! I also lost my add to dictionary for the default ASPELL dictionary. It is apparent that update does not read in the users home directory to gauge changes in appearance etc, nor does it read any about the installation is is to update. It would appear that if the base system is KDE with KDE additions that's what you get and the same for Gnome. I agree with you, these issues are fundamental of very poor QA and something you would expect to find in a product very new to the development process. Enough said. I too will also join you in BETA testing. For my testing Alpha Product would bring me to tears if current internal QA don't change. Traditionally the most difficult task is to write the update routine and represents the biggest challenge of every developer as the default is the one the user has set/created and update progresses around this default - not some new installation default. Update installation routines are the hardest as such to perfect. I will probably running into during Beta Testing of 10.3. Currently I have had to revert to 10.1 as its the only way I can use Evolution Mail Client and this bug will probably not be fixed. I don't know why but Evolution bugs never seems to ever progress unless they are critical or blocker.
