[Bug 256276] New: Kernel framebuffer does no longer support higher resolutions than 800x600
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=256276 Summary: Kernel framebuffer does no longer support higher resolutions than 800x600 Product: openSUSE 10.3 Version: Alpha 2 Platform: 64bit OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: Kernel AssignedTo: kernel-maintainers@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: one_way@online.de QAContact: qa@suse.de Several weeks ago I noticed that my factory tree installation would no longer start with the graphical bootsplash, but complained that an illegal VGA mode number was given. However, I up to then had booted with "vga=0x31a", which means 1280x1024@64k, without the slightest problem. This is still the case as of kernel-2.6.20.2-4. As a graphical bootsplash is an essential part of the openSUSE experience (note: :-) ), I today looked a bit into it and "hwinfo" gave me the enlightening hint that the framebuffer device would - for no obvious reasons - only support 800x600@64k - more colors would even further reduce the available resolution. And voila, with a "vga=0x314" the framebuffer worked again, albeit with a less-than-perfect resolution. The hardware is a 64bit AMD64 machine with a NVidia GeForce 4 AGP card. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=256276 ------- Comment #1 from one_way@online.de 2007-03-26 11:25 MST ------- This problem seems also to affect the X.org configuration as provided by SaX2: Here the maximum possible resolution is also only 800x600 (#257323), though a manual change of /etc/X11/xorg.conf re-enables the higher resolutions. Maybe some communication problem between the monitor and the OS (worked flawlessly for years before, however)? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

I remember a similar bug some time ago, which occurs only on some NVIDIA TNT/TNT2 cards depending on the card's VBIOS. https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=256276 ------- Comment #14 from one_way@online.de 2007-05-08 11:50 MST ------- After some discussion with the responsible SuSE maintainers (thanks a lot) I more or less stumbled over the solution to the problem: Nothing in my computer setup has changed, but what I didn't think of was my new TV. The new TV is, like the previous one, connected to the composite video output of the graphics board adapter box. Obviously the new TV causes the graphics card to automatically reduce the resolutions to the more TV compatible ones. For some reason beyond my understanding, this didn't happen with the old TV. So as far as I concerned this bug can be closed. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
