https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=633468 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=633468#c0 Summary: Printer writes: GenericResourceDir doesn't point to a valid resource directory. Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.3 Version: Final Platform: 64bit OS/Version: openSUSE 11.3 Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Network AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: matthias.hermanns@web.de QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux x86_64; de; rv:1.9.2.6) Gecko/20100626 SUSE/3.6.6-1.2 Firefox/3.6.6 Upgrade opensuse 11.2 to opensuse 11.3 The upgrade completed without any issues Whenever I print a file from Firefoxm OpenOffice, KPDF/KDE3 etc the message *** Warning: GenericResourceDir doesn't point to a valid resource directory. is created and printed on a separate sheet. The message is related to ghostscript and it seems that some file[s] is[are] missing during install/upgrade process. gs gs -sGenericREsourceDir=./Resource/ reproduce the issue. Please note that this behaviour was triggered by the upgrade process. On 11.2 I haven't had any issues as the one related above. I feel that is something related to build and/or installation. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. try to print a page 2. ( Ghostscript Messages - KPDF/KDE3 ) Actual Results: gs -sGenericResourceDir=./Resource/ GPL Ghostscript 8.70 (2009-07-31) Copyright (C) 2009 Artifex Software, Inc. All rights reserved. This software comes with NO WARRANTY: see the file COPYING for details. *** Warning: GenericResourceDir doesn't point to a valid resource directory. the -sGenericResourceDir=... option can be used to set this. GS>quit I have found the solution offered in the previous bug report but it didn'nt work for me / wasn't understandable to me at all. Where and in which file do I have to type what as a root? Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: Every time I try to print a page via hplip on the network . Actual Results: Every printout start with a seperated sheet of paper which only gives me one line *** Warning: GenericResourceDir doen't point to a valid resource directory. The second page is the printout I wanted to have. Expected Results: print properly without vasting my paper with every printing job (15 pages lost so far) Typing gs in the terminal gives me this: gs GPL Ghostscript 8.70 (2009-07-31) Copyright (C) 2009 Artifex Software, Inc. Petr, I do not understand why you think it is "probably cups"? Did you notice Werner's comment #1 - i.e. https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=633468#c1
Yes, I did. I am not sure if I understand it correctly, though. AFAIK, OOo does not call gs when printing, so it does not pass the problematic -sGenericREsourceDir=./Resource/ option => the gs command must be called somewhere else. A colleague told me that it might be called by cups if someone set it. Johanes, does it make any sense? Do you know who could call gs -sGenericREsourceDir=./Resource/ when printing from OOo? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

From my point of view the root cause is that Ghostscript outputs such warning messages on stdout. But because Ghsotscript did output unexpected messages on stdout all the time in the past this is probably intentionally by design so that it will not be changed by upstream Ghostscript or it cannot be changed without breaking backward compatibility.
The next cause from my point of view is that certain packages (see comment #12) seem to provide some kind of "invalid" stuff in /usr/share/ghostscript/Resource/ which lets Ghostscript output the above warning message. The last cause is that foomatic-rip-hplip calls gs in a meanwhile too traditional way which lets unexpected Ghostscript stdout output appear on the printer. I will file an upstream bug report at HPLIP regarding this particular cause. I don't know what to do regarding the other two causes. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
